uni of notts or uni of leeds

i’m having a huge conflict about where i actually want to go to university.
i’ve always been so so excited about the thought of going to uni, being independent, having great nights out, making new friends and studying psychology which i am so interested in and can’t wait to advance into a career within.
i went to the nottingham open day and fell in love with the campus, also my corse looks amazing there because they have a lot of clinical psychology topics which i what k want to do. however, on the open day i didn’t rlly go into the city which in hindsight i defo should have. i’m feeling unsure it would be a nice place to actually live? also, i know it’s a tik tok stereotype but all im seeing is how notts girls are feral- and don’t get me wrong i will love a good night out and thats somthing i rlly want from a uni city- however i do have a boyfriend and not sure i want to be surrounded by the stereotype i keep seeing.

on the other hand im debating leeds- the city looks unreal and so so much fun. im going to their offer holder day with a friend on wednesday so ill see what i think of the actual uni when i go. the corse doesnt appeal to me as much from what ive seen, but all psychology corses are generally pretty similar, its more the optional modular that differ. i’m thinking i might prefer leeds as a place to live but then im unsure at the moment.

any advice please let me know!!

Hi, i live in Nottingham. My son went for 2 years to UON to do electrical/ electronic engineering… he stayed in halls both years.. and dropped out!. The students he was with were ALL private school kids, no job, partied 7 days a week, and it was a total eye opener for him. He had to re take the 1st year, this time he stayed off campus, but with international students in Beeston, and this was the TOTAL opposite! NO ONE mixed.. he was sooooo unhappy in every avenue.
Mental health realllllly declined, Im glad he left. He’s now gone on to do an Electrical apprenticeship.
I will be honest. Nottingham CITY is foul. It’s foul. Very rare i go, and when i do i can not wait to leave. My lad doesn’t actually think much to the city, he prefers towns for nights out, felt safer. But, thats our insight to Notts. YES UON campus is OUTSTANDING, butttt was it worth the course, maybe he’d of been better at Trent..

Hi there,

I don't know much about Nottingham or Leeds, but hopefully I can help a little.

I'd definitely recommend taking some time to do your own research. What can Nottingham and Leeds offer you in terms of the city? Looking online can help you here, but just be mindful of certain things on platforms such as TikTok, which may not be accurate of the entire student experience. Aside from the course, you might want to think about: the kind of things would you get involved in; the places you'd like to visit; the distance from your home, and the facilities on campus and in the city.

It might also be useful to talk to current students, which you can do through UniBuddy. You can ask about the course, student life, and about their experiences in the time that they've spent there. I've linked Leeds here.

Also, just remember that stereotypes may not be totally accurate. I'm sure there are so many people that are the complete opposite to what you are seeing, it just depends who you choose to spend your time with! While the student life experience does play a part, finding a course that you are going to be happy with for the next three years is vital.

I hope this helps,

thank you so much, thanks honestly such helpful advice!!
i agree, i think ive been anxious about picking the right uni and having not much to go off my self in terms of what it will actually be like, so maybe i have been feeding too much into stereotypes i find online.
just downloaded uni buddy, i had no idea that was a think thank you!!

I studied at Leeds and know both cities well. They are both very good places to live, with their own positives. But for me Leeds snicks it, vibrant and next to Yorkshire Dales. The Leeds campus is a mix of architectural styles, beautiful and brutal, I really loved it. The SU is superb, I imagine amongst the best in UK.

In summary I think you would be happy at either uni, and I don’t know about the courses, but my slightly biased recommendation would be Leeds. Visit both and make your decision confident that you can’t really go wrong
