Studying Sociology With Psychology at City St Georges

Hi, I’m a second-year Sociology with Psychology and Data Analytics student at City University. I enjoy this course because it gives me the chance to explore both sociology and psychology two fields that are different but connected. Sociology helps me understand social structures and systems, while psychology gives me insights into individual behaviour and mental processes—it’s interesting to see how they complement each other .

I’m currently doing a 10-week placement with the Greater London Authority as part of my data analytics module, which has been an amazing hands-on experience. Since my first year of university, I’ve also worked as a Marketing Ambassador, taking on roles like Course Ambassador, leading campus tours, and assisting at events. Additionally, I’m a UniBuddy Ambassador, where I answer questions from current and prospective students about my course and City University.

City University also holds regular networking events that give students the chance to connect with a wide range of organisations and professionals from various sectors. These events help build your networking skills and explore potential career opportunities.

I’d love to hear from others—what course are you studying, and what opportunities have you explored at university, like placements, volunteering, or ambassador roles? How have they benefited you?

Hi! It was really nice to read this 🙂 I just wanted to ask, since this is a joint degree with sociology being the major, does the dissertation only have to be in sociology? Because when you read up the modules for year 3 it says sociology final project/dissertation. Does this mean that I’d only need to do a dissertation on sociology excluding psychology? Please do let me know anything you can about the dissertation and the socio to psych ratio! (i love socio and psych both but prefer when I have to write longer projects for socio), also I dont want to do data analytics with it so please could you answer my question taking that into consideration too x
Thank you

Hi!😊👋 Its so nice to hear from you, and I get your question. Since this is a joint degree with Sociology as the major 📚, the final year dissertation is classed under Sociology. That means your project would need to have a sociological focus, but you can still bring in psychology 🧠 into it if it links with your topic. For example, some people may choose dissertation questions that draw on both sociology and psychology perspectives, as long as the main framework is sociological.

In terms of the ratio ⚖️, because Sociology is the major, you'll usually find there are more sociology modules then psychology ones each year. But you'll still get to study psychology modules alongside, so you keep that balance. If you're not the taking data analytics option 💻, your pathway will just stick with Sociology and Psychology, which is still a really good mix.

Hope this helped answer your question!😊
