English Literature NEA - Text Ideas

I've recently been trying to prepare myself for my English Lit NEA, but have been struggling to pinpoint a theme to even read about, let alone write an essay on. I've considered themes like the supernatural, memory or trauma, but can't pick a theme to stick to. I think the main issue is the difficulty of finding texts to study within these themes, so if anyone has anything to recommend for my wider reading towards this, that would be greatly appreciated.

Hey! I finished my NEA in September this year so should be getting results soon!
For me, I just found books I loved and wanted to explore and then almost worked back to find themes that link them.Maybe you could write a bit more about each of those themes as they're both really broad and writing about them to explain to someone might insight inspo or I might be able to think of some books LOL

The theme I've been leaning most heavily into is trauma, and I was definitely thinking a lot about ideas around generational trauma alongside PTSD too. I think I saw somewhere that East of Eden and We Need To Talk About Kevin are good texts on guilt and trauma in fatherhood and motherhood respectively, however I'm yet to read them. Any other suggestions for that kind of thing would be great as a fallback, I suppose

Hey! I don’t know what exam board you’re doing but for my exam board (AQA) one book had to at least be pre 1900. Both books can be pre 1900 (my friend did that) but one at least. I checked and East of Eden was 1952 and We Need To talk about Kevin is 2003. That was only a quick google search though!
For books I’ve read the bell jar is always good for sort of mental health and traumatic experiences. Another suggestion could be One Hundred years of solitude which is heavily included inter generational relationships. However these are both post 1900 which isn’t your problem
Researching (although I haven’t read some) these are some pre 1900 possibilities?

Great Expectations defo - there stuff to talk about with Miss Havisham and Estella or pip and his family

Tess of D’Urbervilles apparently is good too - Tess inherits not just economic hardship but also societal and familial expectations that doom her to a tragic fate. The trauma of her assault and mistreatment highlights generational struggles, particularly for women.

The Mayor of Casterbridge - Michael Henchards impulsive actions in youth haunt him and his daughter, Elizabeth-Jane, leading to a tragic cycle of loss and regret that affects both their lives.

Hey, thanks a bunch. I checked and I'm on Edexcel, where there's no era limit thankfully. I will check out the other texts you've recommended, but we already study Tess of the d'Urbervilles for our prose paper 😅 Thanks alot for the helping hand though!
