Pembroke College Cambridge 2025 applicants

Hey! I thought it might be a nice idea to start a thread for people who have offers specifically from Pembroke, Cambridge seeing as we will hopefully end up meeting each other in October )

I have an offer for Law, and I'm currently studying English lit, politics, Latin and AS maths. Hopefully some more people will see this and we can all introduce ourselves

Hi,
Would you mind answering some questions? What A levels did you pick and did you do any extra curriculars? What is the biggest advantage you had that landed you an offer? Thanks ! Hoping to do medicine at Pembroke too!! Also how were your GCSE grades?

Hey happy to help! I do Biology, Chemistry and Physics A Levels (applied with A*A*A* predicted) and got 10x 9s at GCSE. For Medicine, nailing the UCAT is super important as this is quite a big factor pre interview for other unis and post interview at Cambridge. This year was super weird for applying as it was the first year Cambridge (and a few other unis) were using the UCAT not BMAT so I worked really hard on it and I ended up getting in the top 1%! Re extracurriculars, any leadership positions and teamwork/communication experiences will definitely help give you lots to talk about in interviews for other unis, but for Cambridge I did a lot of wider reading of topics I found interesting (maybe do a MOOC?) and entering some essay competitions. I would really reccomend participating in the Cambridge Biology Challenge run by Homerton college (I personally really enjoyed it and we also got a distinction and a research prize in one of our entries). Most important thing (I think) is having good GCSEs, predicted grades and UCAT and just being passionate about the science behind Medicine! Good luck with everything and I’m very happy to answer any other questions you might have

Thank you very much! How would you say I should prepare for the UCAT? As rn I’ve been just doing past questions . I keep getting 70%-60% is that good? ( I do the grade in percentage as I find it easier to compare )

The main thing is just making sure you don’t burn out! All it takes is a few super intense days and your score can drop by like 300! I assume you’re in Y12 so I’d say honestly just focus on end of year exams for now (especially if these determine your predicted grades) and then focus on UCAT over the summer. I personally took it at the end of August so I had the most time possible but still got it done before Y13 started! It sounds like you’re doing well so far so really just don’t do too much work! Fir later, he tips that helped me improve the most are: for VR, try get 12 Qs done in first 5 mins (this improved my score and timing by so much). For QR, just get very fast as knowing which questions to flag guess and move on. Lastly for DM, practise every Q type (focussing on your weaker sections). If you are stuck on any sections, there are so many tips on YouTube so just keep trying new things to figure out what works for you!! Just please don’t stress about it now (I only started like 3 months before and did like 1-2h per week until the month before) and enjoy your free time as Y13 gets super busy!! I hope it helps and lmk if you have any more questions

I’m dying to find the other few people who have an offer to study Architecture. I think that less than 5 (including me) were given one (out of 71 applicants!) so the chances that I’ll find one here are slim, let me know

Hi!! I have an offer for History and Modern Languages (German)! Would be exciting to know if there are any others - it's annoying that the website doesn't specify when there's less than 5 offer holders for the subject :frown:

Huge well done to you too! I'm drowning in revision posters rn lmao, my room is absolutely covered in them.
How are you feeling for the exams? Also I'd be so interested to hear about what you do for Latin A-Level and what the course covers, since I (as a language girlie til I die) would have absolutely loved to do that but my sixth form doesn't offer it 😔

So sorry this took me forever to reply to!
I'm freaking out about exams but just trying hard not to think about it tbh! Hope revision is going well for you!
Latin A Level is my favourite one I think. We cover so much stuff! There are two language papers and two literature. For the language, we do a prose composition paper (so English into Latin), and an unseens translation paper (one verse unseen by Ovid and one prose unseen by Livy). For literature, you could cover up to 4 set texts but our school chose to do 2 parts of the Aeneid and 2 parts of Cicero's Pro Caelio. Most of the essays you have to write are Eng Lit-style language analysis-type essays of particular passages from your set text, and then you also get asked a much broader, overarching question that covers the whole text. It's a lot but I find studying ancient languages just so cool! What A Levels do you do?)

No worries about replies lol i get it
I would actually die to take latin a-level omg that literally sounds like my dream!! I tried to start learning it at home a couple of years ago but school takes priority blah blah blah.
My A-Levels are French, German, History and Economics (and an EPQ) - i wanted to do Politics but it clashed with French so i had to choose between the two :frown:
Good luck for exam season!!
