Downing College international summer programme

I am currently in year 12, and I am going to apply for physical natural sciences at Cambridge (2026 entry). I have done a range of super-curricular activities, and I thought that a summer programme like the programme from Downing College, would be an excellent opportunity to learn more about advanced physics and maths. Thus, I applied for the physics course, and after an assesment test for maths/physics and an interview I am delighted to say that I am accepted. However, the problem is that you apparently need to pay all the fees within five days and my family simply does not have 9.000 pounds in such a short notice. (Funds are also not available since in the Netherlands, where I live, there are only bursaries for full studies.) Unless a miracle happens, I could therefore not attend the course. I feel really upset about this, and thought maybe someone here could reassure me that it isn't that big of a deal. What do you think?

hello! 9k for a four week course is genuinely ridiculous (especially since two weeks are online?!), and i really cannot think of an experience that would make it worth that amount of money, so please don't feel too down! i have an offer for oxford physics and i have a few friends with offers for natsci at cambridge, and none of us did anything as expensive as this so please don't think it will affect your chances in any way. i think it's amazing that you got accepted onto the programme, but there are so many far cheaper ways to advance your maths and physics skills that would put you in a very good/better position for applying. if what's getting you down is that you think this might negatively impact your chances, cambridge care far more about your ability to do a-level or equivalent physics and maths over what you might know from exclusive advanced lectures, so it really really isn't a big deal at all.

congratulations on getting accepted, it's a testament to your abilities, but know it's far from any sort of deal breaker! i hope this helps you!

The course is, in my view, a rather exploitative way to make money for the college from international students who are less familiar with the admissions process. It is absolutely not necessary or even especially useful for an application and I don't know a single person who's done anything like that in my cohort (third-year Maths student here). There are much better ways to spend your time and money and even if you could find the money, I wouldn't recommend doing it for the sake of admissions.

Thanks for your reply, I really appreciate it! Instead of the course, I am going to do more self-study and practise for the admission test/interview.
