My essay has been flagged for possible academic misconduct

I had a delay in marks and asked my lecturer why this was the case and he later informed me my essay has been flagged for academic misconduct. I’ve been crying since because I wrote the essay myself and I’m also in final year of university and don’t want to get kicked out. Has anyone been in a similar position or knows what happens in this meeting?

Did you knowing perform academic misconduct?

Speak with your personal tutor or (recommended) student union for advice.

Hey,

I’m really sorry you’re going through this, it’s completely understandable to feel upset, especially in your final year. Academic misconduct allegations can be stressful but try not to panic just yet. The most important thing right now is to stay calm and gather information on what happens next.

At most universities, being flagged for academic misconduct doesn’t automatically mean you’ll be punished. You’ll usually have a meeting where you can explain your side. It’s a chance to present your case and provide any evidence that you did the work yourself. You might want to ask your lecturer or academic integrity office for more details on why your essay was flagged. Sometimes, it’s due to high similarity in plagiarism software, incorrect citations, or even just an unusual writing style.

If your university has academic support services (like the AskUs service at Salford University), they might be able to guide you on how to prepare for the meeting. You could also reach out to your personal tutor if your university offers one, they can offer support and may have helped students in similar situations before.

During the meeting, stay honest and explain your process. If you wrote the essay yourself, you should be able to discuss how you researched and structured it. If referencing was an issue, showing that you misunderstood a citation style rather than deliberately plagiarising can make a difference in how they assess the case.

You’re not alone in this, and many students have gone through similar situations and resolved them. Try to get as much information as possible, prepare well, and seek support from university services or even a student union if they offer representation. Hoping it all works out for you!

Best of luck!

Hi,

I am so sorry this has happened especially when you are almost done. I am confident if it is not academic misconduct they will simply check this and then release your grade. I would recommend speaking to your academic tutor as they will be able to give more tailored advice.

Hope this helps! Faye 🙂
