Worried about getting a job - biomedical science

So I'm going to Cardiff Met university to study healthcare Sciences. Following this course, I wish to become a biomedical science, preferably working with the NHS. The course is IBMS accredited. However I am worrying about the availability of jobs in the future. What if I graduate and there are practically no jobs available? I've had a look at the NHS's vacancy website, and there are not many job openings In my area. I know it may seem that I'm worrying about something which is so far ahead of me, but I'd rather get an understanding of how jobs work in advance. Thank you.

Hello there,

I hope you are well.

We know that finding a job is very stressful! But please do not worry too much about it as you never know, there may be many vacancies available after you graduate. I would recommend you contact Cardiff Met careers services on [email protected] for more information about career advises.

You are more than welcome to contact the programme director, Dr Sally Hicks on [email protected] who will be able to provide more information about jobs at NHS.

NHS isn’t the only employer for those in biomedical. In fact, they’re not great for work-life balance and pay.

Look more into Med Tech and Pharma employers.

Sign up to NHS jobs and Trac email alerts for BMS jobs and you'll see a constant trickle of them, its not a huge amount but they do keep popping up.

Cardiff Met's Healthcare Science is more than just accredited, with the placements you'll come out of it HCPC registered and able to work as a BMS straight away, a step ahead of numerous graduates who have just done a Biomedical Science degree who need to first find a Trainee BMS post or work as an Medical Laboratory Assistant or Associate Practitioner while doing top up modules.

The NHS commissions places on this course based on the number of new BMS they expect to need when that cohort qualify, but if my own place of work is any guide there's a huge demand for BMS. Try to do well (particularly on the placements which is where potential future employers are going to get a look at the incoming graduates), but I really wouldn't stress too much about finding a job at this point.

you’re very likely to get into the course you want if you get good grades with those A levels. but even if you dont get in, you can get into nearly any other STEM subject with those A levels aswell

Study a medical related science or engineering degree. You’ll create and design the methods, procedures, and tech to diagnose and treat patients, all for half the hours and double the standard of work-life balance.

The worst person you’ll deal with is maybe an annoying colleague, and not a drunk and/or violent hooligan on a weekend evening.
