Changing course

I recently start my first degree, My SF loans have been approved, although I would like some advice on potentially changing courses.

If I were to change course, what would happen with SF, please?

Hi there, what is the name of the university you are applying to? Can you please confirm the exact course title of the new course? Is this a Full Time or Part Time course? How many years is the course in total? When are you planning to start your studies? Thank you, Stephen.

Hi Stephen, apologies in only getting back to you.

I started my current course in February, I have received 2 maintenance loans, the final one is due in August. I’m considering withdrawing which will obviously mean the last payment will be blocked.

I’m considering applying for a new course, starting in September at Arden University (Bsc) computing.

I’ve spoken to student finance and they said I’ll more than likely be funded for the new degree. But I’m wondering how maintenance loans will work? I’ll owe student finance money as I haven’t completed my current course and I’ve received 2 payments.

If approved, will I receive the maintenance loans for the next academic year? And I’ll have to repay back what I owe? Or how would it work?

Thank you for your help.

Hi there, when students receive support for each academic year, this is not requested to be paid back straight away (unless there is an overpayment) and any supported years awarded are carried forward and added to the student's final balance. Once graduated or the student has stopped thier studies, and becomes eligible for to make repayments, this is when we would seek to have deductions taken, but for more information in relation to that, it would be best to speak to the repayments team. However from the application side, we would look to assess your support based on this:

new course length + 1 additional year (for resits) - previous study = remaining entitlement.

As long as your remaining entitlement is more or equal to your course length, then you will be eligible for support for the new course. Thanks, Stephen.

Hi Stephen,

If my new course was 4 years, would I still be eligible for support, baring in mind I’ve already used 1 year of funding in my current course.

Hi there. Yes that is correct. As this will mean only the additional or gift year has been used, you would still be okay for funding for the full course. Thanks, David
