Hey @used-infant

I personally didn't study a foundation diploma but know a lot at KSA that did and found it really useful! From their experiences, they decided this route after a-levels because some weren't ready for the big uni jump or some didn't know exactly what they wanted to do within an art uni so this would have been a year to explore the courses and facilities offered. After this you can realise what sparks your interest and what doesn't and whether you want to explore the uni further or jump around to other locations!

Just incase you were interested I have left the link below for the Kingston art foundation course to get some further info!

I hope this helped!

As someone who's currently doing a foundation diploma, I would recommend - there's lots of opportunity to try new things and (at least at my college) the teachers are very encouraging, and the course is very broad. I'm not going on to do art, but I can see how it would be very helpful for someone who was, because it gives you an idea of where you'd like to specialise (if you want to at all!), as well as giving you a lot of experience before you even start your degree.

Hey! I'm currently on the foundation diploma and am enjoying it so far - we've done a lot of small-ish projects, and also had a lot of chances to explore new skills in workshops. We're about to start our final, larger, project, but I'm not really sure about how projects etc differ across different courses. I'd defo recommend!

Interesting! I knew they did projects but i wasn't too sure of the structure. I'll definitely try to go down this route, thank you!!

Hey @used-infant!

I'm currently on a BA (Hons) Fine Art and Art History course here at Kingston. Although I didn't take a Foundation Year, lots of my coursemates did and they always recommended it. Foundation Years give you access to facilities and workshops that you typically don't get to experience at A-Level, and allows you time to experiment with different mediums and ways of working. It can also help you in building a portfolio for future BA applications - I know a few of my coursemates had workshops during their Foundation Diploma which were specifically dedicated to making/curating portfolios.

Hope this was helpful,
Eve (Kingston Rep).
