Durham Uni Accom

Please help🙏
Im stuck between 3 colleges when deciding my ranking for durhams accom.
St Hilds and Bede - my favourite building but the non- gowned put me off (please dont call me silly
John Snow - perfect just the building felt very much like an American school
University/Castle - self catering is a need for me but New Kepier felt very disconnected from the college itself, I’m not sure if its a risk too putting castle and potentially ending up in a catered college or even a shared bedroom flat at Kepier, but I just loved the tradition + facilities castle had to offer.
I’ll take any advice

Hiii!!
Im kind of in the same place in regards to the Castle. I dont really know how highly I should rank it since it feels like a one in a lifetime opportunity to go there, but at the same time there are some thing that make me doubt it. I was also thinking about ùtting John Snow, just dont really know how good the accommodations really are compared to collingwood for example.

I dont think this is much help, hahahaha.

No it’s good to know I’m not the only one 😭… castle seems so great bc of balls + formals its just that kepier feels seperate whereas snow seems to have a really close community and good facilities and its not even that I need to counter on the risk of getting a catered college

No, I get that. But what would you say is the most important aspect for you? Like if you had a rank for the different aspects of the accommodation.

Definitely the self-catering aspect, i’am so picky with eating so not having a kitchen would probably leave me hungry. Thats why I’m scared to put it first incase they do allocate me to a catered college in Castle because I dont think you can then opt for your second choice

Yea, that seems fair, but ig that the question is, do you value eating whatever you want more than the experience of being in the castle?
Also I just found this video, which might be helpful https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h3NPNQrhnm4

Hi! Ive had the exact same problem but I ended up deciding on John Snow. For me it ultimately had everything i wanted. (self catered, gowned formals, nice accommodation) whilst also retaining that community feeling which the self catering at castle didn’t seem to have. I went to the offer holder day on Wednesday and the buildings at John Snow really aren’t that bad and the accommodation is all really nice and clean. I’m not sure what your priorities are but John Snow is what works for me I think.

it feels so nice to know someone else has literally the exact same issue haha! i was also recommended H&B but i just like the fact that john snow has the gowned dinners whilst H&B doesn’t, and also H&B is far out and not near any other colleges so it feels kind of isolated whilst john snow is literally next to south and near all the other hill colleges. what subject have u applied for?

Ive applied for international relations how about you?, but no H&B’s was my favourite building and rooms which I’d put it first if it weren’t for being no gowned but it just didn’t really seem to have the traditional experience, which I do get is silly to choose a college from it’s just JS doesn’t have anything that puts me off it. It’s just annoying that H&B’s isn’t gowned bc the decision would be a lot easier, but Im definitely put off doing castle.

Nice! I applied for English Lit. Yeah same, I really liked H&B but I kinda want that traditional “durham” experience whilst still having self-catered which isn’t really possible in any of the pretty and older colleges. Yeah with castle as well when i visited there I could definitely feel the “posh” and “arrogant” reputation it’s know for as well and felt quite out of place- it was so beautiful though and i mean it is a literal castle which is why i was initially drawn to it😭

No exactly if Castle wasn’t as “hyped” and talked about as what it was I wouldn’t think twice about it😭, the facilities are crazy with castle but having to walk to them and the spread out college sites just made it feel more disconnected whilst its also such a slim chance of getting self-catered, I’d end up stuck if I did get catered at castle.
