advanced higher art?

so basically i have taken all the subjects i needed for uni this year (S5) just for context..

i did n5 art and found it quite easy, i genuinely loved it and walked out with an A. i am wondering if there's as much written work in ah? i never took higher art either. i have heard ah art is a lot of work but it's also relatively independent i believe?

i would want to do expressive mainly - but my question is, will i severely regret this or be ecstatic?

To my knowledge, you can't skip Higher art. You'll have to take it at higher

You can skip higher art, there's someone in my advanced higher class that only did nat 5. It'll depend on your quality of work and what your art department is like, but there's no SQA requirement to have done the higher course. Chances are there would be space in the AH Art class, so you wouldn't need to worry about teachers prioritising getting students that did Higher into the class.

Nat 5 and Higher are basically the same as each other anyways, the only significant difference is the quality of work (and maybe the exam, but both of mine were affected by covid so idk).

The minimum amount of work for the Advanced Higher folio is 6 A1 sheets. That's the amount that is done over all of Nat 5 and Higher combined. However there's a lot more that can go on the sheets, works can be unfinished, and one whole sheet is basically just inspiration images, and you can include a sketchbook towards that amount. The maximum is 12 A1 sheets, which I've found to be easier to reach than I expected.

The other main difference in the folio is that you don't do an Expressive folio and a Design folio. You just do one folio, and then decide what category it fits into best.

There is no exam for the Advanced Higher course.
But that doesn't mean there is no written work. You have to write a 2000 word essay on an artist that has influenced your work. Roughly 1000 on the artist generally, and another 1000 on analysis of a particular piece. This can be worked on throughout the year, and your teacher can check it as often as they're happy to.

Whether or not you'll be ecstatic or regret the choice is hard to say, it really depends on what the teachers are like, how the class is, how much work you can do and still enjoy it. Hopefully this response was soon enough that it can help your subject choices, and if not then there's still time to change them if you want to.
