Chances of getting into undergrad UCL economics

Hey, I’m a home student who has predicted A*A*A* for Math, Geography and History and 99999999999 in GCSE. I guess my personal statement is alright too but not especially good. I am aware that I may be hindered by lacking both A-Level Economics (which my school didn’t offer) and Further Math (which when I joined a new school for a levels- my old school didn’t offer fm- I wasn’t aware what it was and that they offered it). What are my chances into getting into UCL and does anyone know more or less when they will reply to applications.

My cousins both applied for LSE and UCL.

Cousin 1 achieved offers for LSE with Maths, Chemistry and Biology with predicted at A*A*A* and AS-Level Economics achieved at A grade (his school did not offer A-Level Economics) but was rejected based on missing his A grade in A-Level Maths i.e. A*A*Ba in Chemistry, Biology, Maths and AS-Level Economics. However, UCL accepted him for BSc Economics. He also had 9A* at GCSE, no wonder he was was made an offer for BSc Economics. 😉

Cousin 2 was rejected from Cambridge and LSE for not having A-Level Further Maths but accepted by UCL BSc Economics and achieved A*A*A*A in her A-Levels in Maths, French, Philosophy and Economics. She also had 6A* 4A at GCSE.

I would strongly recommend self-studying A-Level Further Maths. The textbooks for Pearson Edexcel have model answers online for free and there are like 10 YouTube channels online too.

Yh I applied to Oxford, LSE, Warwick, UCL and KCL. Ngl I didn’t know what I was doing when I applied and I decided to do economics a month or so before. In fact I didn’t even think I was going to go to uni until a couple of months before as I am the first of my family and wasn’t really aware of the whole process etc and my mum had told me that I shouldn’t even do a levels😂 I had no preparation for entrance exams and in fact I missed the TMUA exam so became ineligible for Warwick and LSE. I reapplied to a&f for Warwick (do u happen to know if this has good prospects for investment banking and if it’s a good course) and got in a week later. At Oxford and KCL I applied to e&m but didn’t write anything about e&m in my ps but I got into KCL. I just turned up for the entrance exam in Oxford so I didn’t do that well, I got 68 and the avg applicant who was accepted got 70 or something I don’t remember. I’m still waiting for my UCL reply.

Warwick is a 'target' university for Investment Banks and Hedge Funds. 🙂 KCL has also gained a considerable reputation lately in recent times.

Thank you, and sorry for the questions😁 do you happen to know if employers for IB target a&f students as much and economics students in Warwick? Or does economics have the edge there? I honestly don’t know about KCL as it still seems far behind the likes of UCL and Warwick perhaps due to it being a fairly new course.

With Accounting & Finance, you will gain exemptions from ICAEW ACA, ACCA, CIMA and ICAS exams. Also, you could do the joint pathway ACA (ICAEW) and CTA (CIOT) i.e. Accounting and Tax and become invaluable to Hedge Funds and Investment Banks. By joining one of PwC, Deloitte, KPMG and EY i.e. "Big 4" you would be headhunted by Investment Banks. But you can earn a few million as a Partner in the "Big 4" firms.

Economics has a better 'connection' with some Investment Banking roles, but you could still apply. However, I would recommend joining one of the BIG 4 firms and then submitting your CV to Investment Banks. 😉 So many Chartered Accountants and Chartered Tax Advisers work 2 or 3-day weeks on £150,000+ per year here in London. lol 😀

Wow this is really helpful thank you so much 🙏🙏🙏. Probably the most helpful piece of advice I’ve received since looking into unis and applying. Fingers crossed I’ll get my offer from ucl econ and be able to choose between the two. Once again, thank you so much!👍👍

Hi, I ended up getting my UCL economics offer, and and how helpful your advice was so i thought I’d ask u:
My offers are- UCL econ, Warwick A&F and KCL E&M. If it were u, what would you firm and what would you insure. (Based on employment prospects, quality of the course/teaching and social life, in that order of importance to me)

UCL Econ firm

Warwick Accounting & Finance insurance (if set on Big 4 Audit/Tax/Consulting)

OR otherwise KCL E&M insurance

Warwick asks for A*AA with A in A-Level Maths, and you must e-mail them and ask them if you can get a lower offer as you want to make them your insurance offer. Whereas KCL is a newer department and might be more lenient with entry requirements, but also remember to email the department and ask them if they can lower the offer to AAB or so perhaps?!

What 😳 can we actually request University to lower the offer requirements?

I have Warwick offer with A*A*A as requirement ( because I got < 4 in TMUA ). am thinking of firming up this offer . Can I actually write to University requesting for reduced offer , if they accept that will be quite a relief

Someone in my immediate family had a terminal illness, and my uni didn't reduce the offer requirements down from A*A*A* 😬.

Unlikely, good luck; unis are brutal.
