Insurance choice

My son is wanting to study Business but due to financial implications York will be his insurance choice .What are the chances of getting university accommodation in Year 1 if we submit our application as soon as the system opens ?Thanks

Applying "as soon as the system opens" will not impact his chances of accomodation at York.

The way it works (as explained here) is that only students who had selected York as their firm choice, and applied for accomodation, by 31 July are guaranteed accomodation. But when they applied for accomodation is immaterial, and it is not allocated on a first-come first-served basis. Instead, such students are allocated accomodation in a random order.

It is only once these "guaranteed" students have been allocated accomodation that others are considered (which would include those who had already applied for accomodation, but we're holding an insurance offer). Although they don't explicitly say that these candidates will be offered accomodation in a random order too, that is certainly the implication.

Just one thing to add to DataVenia's answer: University accommodation is prioritised for first year students, so even though your son isn't covered by the accommodation guarantee as York is not their firm choice, we still highly encourage him to apply for accommodation by 31 July 2025.
