Second Degree Student Finance and Maintenance Loan

Hi,

I’ve already completed a Honours Degree and wanted to know if I would be eligible for funding for a second degree. The second degree is a Top-Up course and will be studied full time, in campus

https://arden.ac.uk/our-courses/undergraduate/degree-top-ups/bsc-computing-top-up

Would I be eligible for the full student finance tuition fee loan and maintenance loan?

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks

Hi exquisites,

Computing is an exception to previous study and equal level qualification rules if you are attending a part time course only.

Thanks, Clare

Hi Claire,

Thank you for your reply.

So this course has both part time and full time study.

If I was to choose the part time study method, would I be eligible to apply for the tuition fee loan as well as the maintenance loan?

Thanks

The mode of learning is Blended Learning. How would that affect the SFE application in terms of full time/ part time

Hi,

Yes, if it is part time and you are attending the course in person/not distance learning, then you can apply for Maintenance Loan and Tuition Fee Loan.

Thanks, Clare

Okay perfect.

How about if I was to do this course;

Also, in regards to maintenance loan, how would it be paid? As it’s a part time course 18 months, would the maintenance loan be split across the 18 months?

Thank you for your help

Hi exquisites,

Yes, if taken part time, it is an exception to previous study and equal level qualifications.

You aren't paid every month, the entitlement is paid out in line with the start of each term, there are 3 terms per academic year of your course.

Thanks, Clare

Okay perfect.

Thank you so much!

I spoke to the customer service rep over the phone and they advised that as it’s a HNC, i will not be funded!

So I’m a bit confused now.

Issue is, I already have a PG loan approved (haven’t started my studies yet) which is due to start mid March, however, I would rather do a full degree with a HNC/HND then top up so I can achieve a full degree and then PG in that field.

Thanks

Hi there,

Just to confirm, are you referring to the course that you linked above? Is that the HNC?

Thanks, Graeme

Thanks, sorry for the confusion.

In order for a course to be a part-time exception it needs to be at degree-level. So, it can't be an HNC or HND etc, it needs to lead to a degree.

It may be worth asking if it's possible to study a degree-level course instead.

Thanks, Graeme

Hi,

Ahh fair enough.

I have found another course - https://www.derby.ac.uk/undergraduate/computing-courses/internet-of-things-bsc-hons

Just in the middle of finding more info.

Just a quick question, in terms of maintenance loan, how would that work on a part time course?

So for example, if the current maintenance loan for full time study is £10,000 would part time study be half if the course intensity is 50%? Or would it still be £10,000? Over the course of 6 years? (The amount is an approximate)

The issue is I am a mature student and currently work full time, in order for me to go back into education, I would need to reduce my working hours dramatically, hence why the maintenance loan is important to me.

Thanks once again

Hi there, the award of the maintenance would be based on the study intensity itself, unfortunately, I would be unable to confirm what this would be for you at this time, this can only be confirmed at the time of review by the actual assessment team. Thanks, Stephen.
