Should I drop out to retake my a levels and try and pursue a better uni

Hey, I'm currently studying electrical and electronic engineering at MMU in my first year. I got into MMU through clearing I was predicted AAC and got an offer from bristol for ABB but ended up getting BCC. I've been considering dropping out to retry my A levels and try and get into a more respected university, not necessarily Bristol, as my A level results is something I've been upset about since getting them. I have a healthy social life in Manchester and enjoy the course I'm just worried it won't lead to a fully fuffilling future and I'll end up regretting staying on this course knowing I have the potential to get into a better university and to be more proud of myself. Please let me know if you have any advice or similar expirience thank you.

If ur happy at your uni then I wouldn’t. Most people that retake a levels actually end up with lower. Best thing to consider would be what prevented you from getting those grades, and how would it be better this time?
I feel like it’s not just about where your degree comes from but what you do with it. Potentially getting another degree upon completion somewhere else could be a good option maybe?
Either way, whether you drop out or not is your decision and I certainly don’t think it’s a really bad idea, just in my opinion not something I would do if I was happy on the course.

Take it from me, i got lower after retaking and now im doing a foundation year at a lower ranked uni. But because im unhappy here, i decided to apply to my intial uni i applied to, with my foundation year grade. ive got 2 offers as of now. So i would say to stay if you are happy, and there are other things to do improve your cv, such as internships , courses and also you can maybe do a masters at higher ranked uni.

Hey Abdullah, sorry to hear you feel you're not being pushed enough on your electrical and electronic engineering first year. I would suggest speaking with your Programme Lead about this. If you're not sure who that is, you can contact our Course Enquiries team and they'll be able to advise: 0161 247 6969 or [email protected]. Hope this helps ☺️

Stay where you are if you're happy there. If you have the money and time to spend a year "improving your prospects", then do it afterwards with a Masters at a higher ranked uni.

You’re very wrong. Most people retaking don’t achieve lower grades. They achieve up to 3/4 grades higher.

If people do then they simply didn’t try hard enough?

It's very common to feel ****ed off about A level results that weren't what you hoped (even when you still get into your Firm).

Whilst there are some things in life that it is appropriate to try to change, this is one of those instances where you'll get the most benefit from learning to live with those feelings. You have a healthy social life and you are enjoying the course... those things are precious in the here and now and will contribute to a fulfilling future. Don't let a bit of snobbery spoil a good thing.

Old polytechnics like MMU may seem less prestigious than older universities but polytechnics were designed to meet the needs of employers in a way that ‘more prestigious’ universities weren’t. This means even now, a few decades later, they can be better at providing more vocational courses like electrical and electronic engineering and have better employment prospects for those courses. Retaking A levels and restarting university will put you two years behind where you are now. If you are keen on experiencing a different university you could do a masters somewhere else?
