Dissertation Failure

I was wondering if anybody has failed a dissertation module but was able to redo it and what it was like? Thank you.

Hi there,

Whilst not having experienced it i would advise looking up your university module policy or emailing your course director as it can be very specific to different universities. If you need to pass every module to graduate, then retaking the modules over the summer and graduating in autumn is common, in which case you would just retake the module like normal - with different teaching support levels depending on the uni.

Some universities offer different options than retakes, if your grades are healthy in other areas or if they don't require it so definitely check online/email a teacher for the best information.
Hope this helps

Hey,

It’s always good to know your options if things don’t go as planned. While failing a dissertation can feel overwhelming, many universities do offer the opportunity to re-sit or redo the module, often with certain conditions in place.

At Salford University, for example, students have access to personal tutors who can provide academic guidance, and it’s worth checking if your university has a similar support system. Your personal tutor or dissertation supervisor would be a great first point of contact to understand what the process would look like in your case.

The experience of redoing a dissertation can vary depending on your university’s policies. Some students are given an opportunity to revise and resubmit their existing work, while others may have to start fresh with a new topic. The amount of time you get to redo it also depends on whether it’s a resit within the same academic year or a full repeat year. If you’re unsure, I’d strongly recommend reaching out to your course leader or student services to clarify what options are available to you.

It might also be useful to check if your university has any academic writing support or workshops. Many students find these helpful when improving their research and structuring their dissertation more effectively the second time around.

If you’re able to redo it, try to approach it with a fresh perspective. Reflect on any feedback you received and don’t be afraid to ask for help. You’ve already put in the effort once, and now you have the opportunity to learn from the experience and improve. Best of luck, and I hope it all works out for you!
