What do I do?

Hi, I am currently an S5 student who is currently sitting my highers. I study H human biology, H chemistry, H computing science, H english, and N5 maths. In s4 I did N5 applications of maths so this year I am doing N5 maths. I achieved 7A's at N5 and i achieved all A's in my prelim this year. For s6 I am on picking ADVH biology, ADVH chemistry, H maths and crash H physics. Unfortunately, as I only do 4 highers than the standard 5 I cannot apply for medicine. I do have work experience in health care and still have a dream of becoming a doctor. I want to know if this plan seems reasonable. I am considering applying for Pharmacy at the University of Strathclyde and once I graduate I will apply for medicine. I want to know if I have a decent chance of getting into med school if I try extremely hard for the UCAT and I also have relevant work experience and hopefully will have more once I graduate. I do have quite strong grades and hopefully my s6 grades are just as excellent.

yes and unfortunately I don't meet the widening access criteria. My stats are NAT5: AAAAAAA, H: AAAA + an additional nat 5 (predicted all A's). In s6 i hope to take Adv H bio and chem, H maths, and crash H physics. I have a lot of work experience. My plan is just to do an MPHARM degree, I also meet the entry requirements. I am going to aim to get a 2:1 or above and also study for the UCAT in hopes to get a good score. So i think I have an Ok chance of getting an offer in a few years than now if I put in the work.

Check all the unis requirements for the gateway - they are not the same. I don’t remember which one but there is one in Scotland which will consider 4 highiers instead of 5 in special circumstances. Check if your school is on a target school List - they are different for different uni’s
Are you rural location?

Good luck! Maybe consider looking at English unis too (although they do cost lots unfortunately), I think some of them consider less Highers but don't take my word for it.

Do you guys think it is worth me trying my hardest to get into medicine if I am extremely passionate about it?

If you're so passionate about it you'd do another Higher then take a look at your local college's evening classes, they often run Higher classes. UHI has a virtual school which offers a small selection of Highers that are completed online e.g.: https://www.nwh.uhi.ac.uk/en/courses/index.php?course-level-search=Higher
Or teach yourself an AS or A Level and sit the exam privately. Probably an easier route to do this now than doing the pharma route

Instead of doing a whole other degree, you should apply for Gateway to Medicine courses; it means only an extra year added on

you need to be eligible for widening access don't you?

If you are thinking of doing another degree first then you would be as well looking to England to do medicine regardless of fees. There is no guarantee you not be paying fees for a medical degree in Scotland in five years time anyway. English universities are more likely to want three advanced Highers so rather than crash Highers you might be better taking a third advanced higher and applying there.

Hey,

Sadly unless you are widening access you would not be accepted. Your best bet is to do a degree then apply to graduate medicine.
