Hello!

Awesome to hear you're considering Bath as a potential option for you, and great choice of course!

Biology is the broadest of our life sciences courses, which you can start tailoring to your own interests from year 2 when you can choose from a lot of optional modules.

In year one the course gets everyone up to the same level on core concepts such as biodiversity, cell biology, genetics and ecology/evolution.

In year two you have more choice about what you learn and can pick from modules relating to cell signalling, plant sciences, cancer biology, maths, infection and immunity etc.

In year three if you do the 5-year MBiol you'll go on placement for a year. This is genuinely a great thing to do if its for you - you can take a break to do something fun and different for a year, earn some money, and it will add so much value to your grad CV and make you stand out. You could end up in a large corporation such as the Royal Botanical Gardens Kew, AstraZeneca, Genesys, or somewhere smaller depending on your preferences.

In year four you do both research skills and a dissertation as compulsories but can also choose a wider variety of modules in topics like evolution, infectious disease, developmental, and also more business/entrepreneurial topics like entrepreneurial biotechnology, science education and business.

In year five you'll essentially take on the role of a high-level biology research scientist. You'll do a 40-credit unit whereby you conduct a full scientific investigation to test a hypothesis under the supervision of an academic in the department (again which you can tailor to your interests) as well as doing a 20-credit unit in advances in biosciences.

You can find more about the course right here!

From personal experience, I genuinely loved my time at Bath as a psychology student. The campus is beautiful, its really well transport connected and the community is vibrant and cosy with so many things other than your studies to get involved with. The teaching quality and research is excellent and I love the look of the campus with the openness, the green spaces and the duck families! I'd highly recommend visiting it if you can!

I hope some of this helps - best of luck with this year and your choices!

Hello there,

My son has applied for the Natural Sciences course and we went to the Offer Holder Day last week but we walked into the wrong lecture hall! They happened to be discussing the Biology/Biological Sciences/ BioChem course, he nudged me to say he was going to find the right place and I just said to him to go and I would sit through it as they would then be discussing generic things such as accommodation etc and I said I would see him after.
Long story short but I basically messaged my friends saying I wished I was back at university and studying Biology! The course looks so interesting and so varied. If you can, I would definitely study Biology at Bath. The course looks brilliant and the placement year makes absolute sense as it gives you experience, a feel for the subject "in the real world" and also a year of earning some money. My son has chosen Bath as his first choice off the basis of the Offer Holder Day.
If you do decide to chose it as one of your choices, I would really recommend the Offer Holder Days as they give you a very good insight. Good luck with your decision
