durham colleges ranking

hi i’m looking for some advice regarding how to rank the colleges. i’m currently favouring josephine butler, john snow and south college. these are my main considerations:

1. has to be self-catered. i’m a picky eater and heard the food can be meh. also would like to save some money
2. would love to have gowned formals and good social activities.
3. diversity? idk i’m a POC so would just to be comfortable lol
4. location. i’ll be studying law and i heard some law lectures will be held in the science buildings? is that true or was i misinformed?

please do let me know if you have any suggestions!

Hi!

I do think any of the three colleges you've selected would be a great fit for you since they're all self-catered and have gowned formals and whilst I can't speak for JoBo and South, I can confirm that John Snow seems to be really accepting of POC students. I truly do feel like I've been part of the community here if that's any consolation but also generally, in my personal experience Durham is much more comfortable for us POC students than you'd think, especially the hill colleges.

As for your location, I would say that it's kind of hard to predict where lectures will be held next year. My law friends currently have most of their lectures in the Lower Mountjoy site but it might change next year. Generally, I'd say there's no reason to try and choose a college that's next to your lectures, especially since all the colleges are a max 25 minute walk from most of the teaching sites.

I hope this helps!

Hello!

Personally for me it wasn't anything specific but just generally the vibes. John Snow is older than JoBo so I personally felt a much stronger sense of community at John Snow than at JoBo but truly the difference between them is minor and it mostly is up to you
