Uni help!!!!

Okay so basically I’ve applied to do law and had 5 offers . I am predicted A*AA and already have half a a-level for Welsh in year 12 ( In wales we are made to do 4 a levels) I have applied for 3 Russel groups and 2 non Russel groups.

Anyways I’m so so stuck on where to pick??!? I luv love love the idea of going to Belfast for Queens Uni and the whole community they’re just seems so so so nice but all my teachers are warning me that it’s not a good idea to go so far for uni being from such a small community ( my school has like less than 400 kids 😭)

So I’m so worried about making the wrong choice + even though I had AAA last year I’m so worried about not getting the grades for queens 😭 I am going to the open days soon! but I’m still super nervous of making a bad decision as Ive been told countless times that future jobs for law are highly competitive and the better chance is to go to a Russel group?

Basically does anyone have any experience going to Belfast from the Uk ? And does going to a Russel group truly matter if I’m thinking about going down a politics , human rights future?

THANKYOUUU 🙏

For law it is very difficult to get a training contract after uni so going to a russel group would definitely help you as the supply and demand of trading contracts is very unbammced as we have to many law grads and fewer training contracts, so going to a respectable uni that’s part of the russel group could help you but it’s not impossible to get it going to a non Russel group , I read that someone graduating from Oxford University struggled finding a training contract but to put u if it’s definitely possible if u really want it!

Honestly I don’t think that matters to much they don’t only look at what uni u went to sometimes alevels and GCSEs play a apart work experience your personality and how well your application stands out, the uni u go to to an EXTENT plays a factor but it’s not the deciding factor if that makes sense

A ranking of 4 places wouldn’t matter too much, however going to a non russel group vs russel group definitely definitely matters when applying for training contracts and jobs in law so do not pass on that opportunity!

Hey!

Congrats on your offers, that’s amazing! It’s totally normal to feel torn, especially when considering moving far from home.

If you love the idea of Queen’s Belfast, definitely take the time to visit on an open day and see how it feels in person. The community aspect is so important, and if you feel at home there, it could be the perfect fit. Yes, it’s a big move, but lots of students move far for uni and end up thriving! Uni is all about new experiences, and Belfast has a great student community.

As for the Russell Group factor—while it can help in some fields, Queen’s is actually part of the Russell Group too! So you’d still be getting that academic prestige. For careers in politics and human rights, your experience, networking, and extracurriculars (like mooting, internships, or activism) will often matter more than just the name of the uni. Employers look at your skills and dedication as much as where you studied.

You’ve clearly worked hard (AAA last year is amazing!), so try not to doubt yourself. If Queen’s is where you see yourself happy and thriving, it’s a solid choice. Open days will help, but trust your gut too!

I suggest that you go to Belfast. The idea that you should not move to a city because you live in a small village is absurd. University is supposed to be about new experiences and personal growth.

University rankings are largely meaningless.

I add that, with your predicted grades, it appears surprising that you did not apply to Oxford, Cambridge, UCL etc. It may be that your teachers give conservative advice.

If you are planning to become a lawyer, I doubt that any law firm or set of chambers will ever make a recruitment decision on the basis of university rankings.

I really appreciate your honest advice !!! thankyou  I was going to apply for UCL and Oxford but went there for a summer school thing and decided I definitely was not smart enough 🤣

Don't worry too much about the choice. Wherever you go, you will do well if you study hard and take advantages of the opportunities. Choice of course is much more important than choice of uni.
