What do u do in a gap year for med?

Hi

There’s a high possibility i may be taking a gap year and reapply for med next year. What do ppl usually do in a gap year? I already have work exp in a hospital, i have work exp online, i have volunteered for healthwatch and i have tutoring exp too. Would this be enough to reapply next year or do i need to do something else during my gap year? I might be employed and tutor in schools for the year, but would it be better to do smth in care homes instead? Im so confused idk wht to do. Would med schools care if i didn’t do smth in my gap year? What have you all done if u took gap years?

Thanksss

What is ur gcse grades and a level grades? What did you get in your AS exams?

My gcse are nnot too grear, i got (L2D*)8777665. I went to a low achieveing state school for gcse so i thought maybe i can pick schools next year that lets me use it to my advantage. I dont think ppl do AS exams mainly here, Im in alevels and predicted A*AA. In my ucat I got 2380 (which is meh) but I got a Band 1. For contextual im a young carer but i didnt really include that in my application so that put my application down even more. I generally didnt use all my factors properly this application cycle, maybe next year ill choose better options.

Yup. U need to strategically apply. Ur ucat is low so u can’t apply to top unis and ur GCSEs low so u can’t apply to top gcse ranking unis.

Maybe these r some options BSMS Plymouth Bristol edge hills Brunel and Anglican Ruskin.

I strongly suggest you resit one subject to get a 7 as some unis do want 5(7s) and if that 7 is not in English do make it .

Yh see i was so bummed because i got a 6 in english and 1 mark away from a 7. I sent it back for a remark and dint get up to a 7. Then i got the highest grade possible in one of them but sillly med schools dont count it as a GCSE so thats was a qualification i spent 2 years on and wasted. I guess i’ll be looking at mostly foundation years ones next year ig. I did HYMS, Aston, Keele and KCL EMDP this year. Aston omgg I read thats a good choice for low ucat but i didnt realise it was because they want crazy great gcses 😭😭. Did u take a gap year or know someone who did? Do u have any suggestions abt wht i should do in the gap year?

One of my cousin went to Cambridge to study medicine he wanted to do dentistry but got forced by you know who. with 7-8-9s but he did maths bio and chem and got all A stars. He has 0 work experience cause all that crap about experience is nonsense it’s about the grades.

My other cousin who has similar GCSEs is in yr 13 but I think her predicted grades were low she said it was AAB. So she didn’t take the ucat and she is doing her a levels first then after taking the ucat next year so a levels rn.

Now I do have as be some Qs. Honestly why did you not include so much contextual eligibility in your application like u said young carer why not progress 8 score and polar 4 quintile stuff .😭

Also do you have what it takes to do a levels and ucat at the same time to apply and not take the ucat next year?

Btw u said u applied to those unis😭😭 all of them require high GCSEs even with a foundation year. They ranked expect keele which only shortlist personal statement and ucat if minimum requires r met which r 5 7s so i dont know why u applied to that one 😭.

Honestly just revise the ucat and a level if u take same year or revised a level now then rev ucat next year and do some experience stuff. Don’t apply to those unis that u did even with resits for GCSEs or anything. Ik kcl is stubborn.

Apply to unis like what I said that do not care unless minimum requirements is met so usually high ucat priority. U could of applied to exter at least cause u met all with contextual Ellgibillitt not sure about ucat tho .😭

Don’t u have the my ucat strategic applications thing?

The low progress 8 score I didnt know was a thing until HYMS sent me a form after i sent my application and that was an option and i was like noooooo. I didnt know i qualified as a young carer when submitting my application, i thought it was normal to step up when things like this happen. Keele was the one that told me hey ur L2D* doesnt count and i was like dammit. Always one problem after the other. I applied to all them bc i thought it counted as a gcse, well now ik its not. I’ll redo the ucat next yr for sure. I learnt sm from this application cycle abt wht not to do. Im still waiting to hear from KCL, i low key think they’re my only acc reasonable option bc i applied to their extended one since i had no chance for the standard one. But after all these rejections i went back and checked kcl and i asked them if they can take my young carer on board now and they were like yeah. So that got me points and they also automatically valued my low progress 8 score too. Theyre the only ones acc looking at all my factors and when i was panicking researching, i saw in a freedom of infor request that their lowest ucat was 2060 and i saw many had similar gcses to me. Also on TSR thread i saw that they’re only on their 2nd batch and the usat score alrdy dropped to approx 2500 and they go on until late march. So fingers crossed i MIGHT have a miracle and hear smth back. But tbf its kcl, theyre such a top-tier uni and ill probs get a no from them too but im hoping not😂 wht did u mean by the last Q? Is that a website or smth?

This is the really useful document for med applications. Obviously the future is not certain but it’s a good guide of whats happened in the past and what might be expected in the future. Minimum entry requirements and admission policies can also change so when you have a shortlist of some med schools then look carefully at the actual uni websites. Do not apply to Bristol with a ucat of less than 3000 - it’s a very high ucat uni! Sunderland and KMMS are both potentially good for low ucat applicants (I believe Sunderland has high volunteering requirements - which you may have because you can count your carer role too and KMMS compare your schools average attainment 8 and yours to see if you scored reasonably above your schools average)

Defo use any contextual criteria you are eligible for. And always triple check you have ticked all the minimum criteria listed on each med school website before applying. You sound really resilient and proactive so well done. It can be very disheartening to not get an offer but is not uncommon at all. Work hard at the ucat this summer, apply strategically and enjoy your gap year!

Study hard for good grades this summer.

My daughter applied this year for deferred entry so has always planned on taking a gap year before starting med. it’s a really arduous process applying, doing the degree, foundation years and long junior doctor years so it’s great to have a slower year with less pressure on you before taking all that on. She plans to travel in a few shortish bursts throughout the year and work in between - probably doing short term live-in carer work so that she can stop it or do more when it suits her/she’s saved up or run out of money 😂

Fingers crossed for kings 🤞
