2025 RCA MA Reference Letter – When & How Are Referees Contacted?

Hi everyone,

I’m applying for an MA course at RCA, and I see that I need to enter at least one referee in the application form. However, I’m a bit confused about how the reference process works.

1️⃣ Are referees contacted only if needed, or is a reference letter always required?
2️⃣ Is there a specific format or template for the letter?
3️⃣ Is there a deadline for referees to submit their letters?

I’m hesitant to ask my referee for a letter now since I’m not sure if it’s even necessary or what the requirements are. I’d really appreciate any insights from past or current applicants. Thanks! 😊

I included a referee on my application form - I previously asked her if this was OK and then sent her full details of my application portfolio. I don't think she was asked for a reference. She was an academic referee who knew me and my work well.
