parking in accomodation

so ive recently visited both chester and plymouth university. however when asking i found that there was no parking for first year students that are living in accom. ive only recently passed my test and my priority is to bring my car with me to university. if i wont be able to do this then im seriously reconsidering not attending university as ive worked so hard towards getting my lisense. any help or advice is welcome

I would check with the university to see if you can’t bring your car. But it looks like you’ve already asked and they’ve said nope. Is there any practical reason as to why you need your car?

For my accommodation (the specific area), there’s no parking unless you have a disability (need the car for exceptional circumstances as a result).

I’d say that it’s not practical to bring a car at university if you’re living in on-campus accommodation.

A lot of unis either don't let you bring cars, seriously discourage it or make it intentionally difficult tbh. It just doesn't make sense for most places to maintain a 1000 odd space car park for students on top of staff and visitors.

thank you for replying. i live over 4 hours away and the train prices are looking to be expensive to get back home so was originally planning on using my car to commute. was also planning on using my car to commute to work on a farm where cant use public transport. its just a massive put off for me if i wont be able to use my car.

In that case I’m not sure what you can do then. Is it possible to go a university that’s closer to the farm or you home or find a part time job at university?
Or maybe living living in a house share or an accommodation near the university that way you are more likely to be able to park the car? I know some people who live in a house share or off campus then drive to university, not that I’d recommend this but yeah.

Hopefully someone with better expertise can give you some advice.

What would you do instead of going to University?
If it's something better, do that.

Hi Meg,

As Talkative Toad said below, could you possibly take on a different part time job during the university terms, that is easier to commute to? The city is only a 10 minute walk away from the Chester university campus and there are lots of businesses who offer positions to students, perhaps before making any decisions you could contact the Chester University student services team and ask if they have any suggestions in respect of bringing your car to campus. Their contact details are: [email protected]. The Student Services team are really helpful and I am sure they will be able to try and offer you some sort of solution.

I hope that you manage to work something out,

Heya! 🙂

Parking at many universities can be a challenge due to limited space/city restrictions. Plymouth doesn't allow parking on campus except for blue badge holders, but you can pay for season tickets in many of the nearby city car parks, purchase a car parking space privately, looking for private accommodation with a parking space/driveway/street permit, or you can look for nearby restriction-free parking on streets, but this might be a little walk away from the main city centre.

Although, I would say I'm only just taking my car for my final year and haven't needed it much at all due to good transport links and everything being under a 15-20 minute maximum walk for me in the city. Hope this helps! 😊
