How can i become a dental hygienst? Can i do an apprenticship AND an a level together

Im starting college next yr so im applying for post 16 options however im not sure what route to go down for dental hygienist and therapy. My gcse predictions are between 6-9s but i dont know whether to do a levels or a level 3 dental nursing apprenticship. i want to so the 27 month dental hygiene and therapy diploma at uni of sheff but its entry requirements state that i ll need both a level 3 dental nursing qualification AND a level biology. I didnt think it was possible to do an apprenticship and an a level unless you pay as a private candidate. Im not sure what to do but i really want to do the apprenticship.

Your initial thoughts are correct, generally you can’t do an A level and apprenticeship at the same time.

That requirement you speak of is for dental nurses who don’t have the required 2 A levels. Given the course you mention only requires “2 A Levels to include one in a relevant Science subject (preferably Biology) at grade CC” you should just do A levels. A levels also give you much more flexibility for your next steps/career choices, e.g. university or other apprenticeships.

Since you’ve not yet done your GCSEs, you might as well aim to do as well as possible so you have a chance of being able to apply for dentistry (to become a dentist).
