Switching courses (Kcl)

Hi there. Back in December I received an offer for history and political economy at Kings. Since then I’ve considered my career further and wanting to work in the finance sector decided I’d like to switch to just political economy in ordered to cover more economics. I messaged on kings apply and was told that the entry closed on Jan 29th and that a change wouldn’t be permitted, however political economy still shows up as open on the Kcl website and it is only the History and political economy course which has closed due to reaching max capacity i am assuming. Would I be able to change when joining in September? I’m aware it’s just a simple change and not drastic but from what kings apply have said it’s not looking good.

The transfer process for individual universities and departments/courses will vary, but if King’s have told you that the change won’t be permitted, it’s likely that the course is oversubscribed or full. I would call to clarify, but for transferring in September, the course would need to have a) not been filled via UCAS extra and b) not have been filled via clearing. If you were able to submit a transfer application, the likelihood of you obtaining a place for your course in September would probably be higher. Though you would also have to consider people who don’t up going to King’s leaving spaces in the course on results day, which could give you a better shot if you were to apply for a transfer later on, but estimating those chances would be near to impossible.

Thanks for the reply, the course on their website is still open even after the deadline which tells me it’s still open. Not sure what my chances of changing are upon arrival. Feel like it should be possible as it’s a minor switch that’s in the same department. Regardless, that may not be possible if the course is full as you say. Not sure what to do…

Call up admissions to clarify the situation. I had to call admissions for one of my universities to transfer from law to philosophy, as the information on the website didn’t provide me with enough clarity. Admissions were very informative about the internal process and I managed to secure the transfer offer within a day after following their instructions. Go directly to the source.

Ok will do that. Did you offer change in terms of grade requirements? Slightly worried about my offer going higher by a grade if I do get the change.

Yes it changed to lower requirements as the philosophy grade requirements were lower than the requirements for law. If your chosen course requires higher grades then the offer they give you would likely require higher grades.

Hey! I go to KCL and have found that in the first year, they tend to be flexible if you want to change courses. I’m a humanities major, and as long as you present a good reason for changing via a form, I think it’ll be possible. Don’t take my word for it, it’s just my experience.

Thank you so much, really appreciate that. Yh like mentioned above I’d just like to switch from History and Political economy to just Political economy. Do you think that a valid reason for the change could be that I want to be able to take more quantitive modules as I’d like to work in finance?

Absolutely! Just emphasise the modules you want to take, and why, and you should be ok. Fingers crossed for you

Thank you, that’s made me feel a lot better especially since you go to Kcl. Do you know anything about the course specifically by any chance? Just in terms of how full the course is each yr as that could potentially be the only reason I don’t get the switch.

Most people who study a degree don’t end up working in the direct field or people in certain fields don’t have degrees from there. In that respect it doesn’t matter and you’ll be fine to work in finance, especially given how broad the sector is you’re looking at. The advantage with HPE is that you will study basically 3 subjects and will learn a variety of skills that you can use to your advantage and display to get internships and jobs into that field. You will also be getting that from one of the worlds best uni’s so don’t stress about switching from HPE to just PE.

Trust me on this because I was in your shoes in 2020. I had an offer from KCL for HPE and wanted to switch to PE. I’m so glad I didn’t end up in the end and I loved it. I have 0 regrets. The HPE course allowed me to study a variety of modules, all different topics and eras that bought different skills and were all intellectually stimulating and challenging. The teaching standard and facilities are great and you will learn so much and be so engaged and then you can use that to your advantage for your career. A lot of how you get into your career isn’t your degree, it’s the effort you do outside of it, so market research, firm research, keeping up with the latest news and articles, networking, going to open days and then subsequently using all this and your skills you develop in your degree to apply and pass the application tests and interviews and land those internships and jobs. Side note also, when you are choosing modules to study in Y2 and 3, if you wanted you could choose as many finance/economics based ones as you wanted that are on offer so long as you meet the requirements. So that also isn’t a worry and for history there are some economic history modules too.

I was part of the first cohort to study HPE in 2020, and I graduate in 2023. I have no regrets and I loved it, in fact I miss it and can’t speak highly enough of it. Your worries are valid and I can understand as I was once there but I can tell you 100% to not worry. Your degree and uni is more than enough and you’ll be able to study all the modules you want and enjoy and go into the career you want. Finance is so broad and they’re not only hiring and looking for econ grads. If you look at people who work there and who they hire, and eventually when you attend insight days etc they will tell you the same. It’s been a year and half since I graduated and I can say it with confidence. If you’re worried or want any indication or reference to your worries then you can think of me or message me. I am a HPE graduate, I had internships in investment banking and investment management, two of the most competitive sectors within finance to work in so you can too and it’s not a worry. I’ll be continuing this on too by joining the FCA on their graduate scheme in September too so just goes to show you can do it. Don’t stress, don’t worry, just really enjoy KCL as it has a lot to offer, especially that degree and the modules and teaching standards and then ofc campus, life and societies.
