Do Europeans learn American English?

I don't know why online people say that Europeans learn British English

When I went to university I met ppl from France, Spain, Netherlands, Switzerland, Germany, Norway and they all had American accents. Except for this guy from Finland. He sounded like an Englishman

Do the Europeans you know speak American?

Europeans watch American TV, it’s not the same thing.

British English is taught
No that has not been my experience at all. British English is taught predominantly in European countries. Perhaps the ones you met just watched too many US TV shows and picked up their accent.

I’m French (living in the UK) and my family watch a lot of American TV and most things on social media that aren’t from the francophone world are usually American.

Yes, a lot of Europeans pick up American English, especially from movies, TV shows, and online content. It’s pretty common, even if their schools teach British English. It just depends on what media they’re exposed to or where they’ve lived.
