Edinburgh Uni

Hi! I just firmed my offer for Edinburgh for law however feeling quite scared about the whole aspect of making friends etc. I'm from Scotland and have heard of the whole snobbery aspect of EDI and quite scared so was wondering if anyone has any advice for friends or even if there's any way to make friends before even stating uni for that extra sense of comfort, thank you

The snobbery was always known but never made aware to the general public on the news, so as it’s gaining more attention im guessing that it will be dealt with more efficiently

Hi! I'm also moving to Edi for vet med and I don't know anyone there so it's definitely scary. I guess forums like these could be an opportunity to know people in the same situation or other offer holders for your course.

I'm praying that flatmates in my hall are nice people and hopefully make friends with them lool.

yes that's exactly what I was thinking, my only issue is that I won't be living in halls because I'm home based so praying these forums work x

Heyy, could you elaborate on the snobbery aspect. I'm an international student, haven't heard of this side of edi before

honestly I'm not entirely educated on the subject but I think if you looked into the Edinburgh Tab controversy on social media you might see a little. It's more just that especially for Scottish students they get overpowered by English and private school students. But I would recommend reading up on the Edinburgh Tab as that's a uni newspaper that has received backlash. I'm sorry if that wasn't much help x

there have been several incidents in which scottish and northern english students were treated unfairly due to being scottish and northern english by wealthy (mainly london based) students including an incident with a social media account call the Edinburgh Tab

Aah I see, thanks for your responses, just read up the BBC article on the issue. Had definitely never heard of this before, good to know before I firm my choices

don’t worry about it too much, you will always find different kinds of people at a uni the size of edinburgh, it’s not something to worry about as long as you don’t pick Pollock halls

What seems to be the issue at Pollock halls? Elitist behaviour I presume?

basically pollock is mainly catered and so former private boarding school people end up applying there with their mates and it kind of creates really large friend groups of incredibly wealthy students from southern england who are known to generally be quite posh and discriminatory to other students from different backgrounds. I want to clarify this is not every one but that is very much the stereotype.
