Birmingham or Exeter med?

I’ve got offers from Exeter and Birmingham for medicine - I’m a bit stuck as uob has lower grades but only if I firm it. I love both but haven’t actually spoken to many uob students so wondering if anyone has any experiences with what the med school is like and can offer any advice on what I should go for.

Thanks!

Ahhh CONGRATS!! which one are you thinking of firming? My Exeter offer is AAC with As in bio and chem but Birmingham is ABB with Bs in any subject so I’m stuck. I’d prefer Exeter on the whole but not sure about getting the A in chemistry and I don’t want to risk not going at all!

i think im gonna firm Exeter and then put biomedical sciences at bath as my insurance as both Exeter and Birmingham have the same grade requirements for me so if I don’t get the grades for Exeter im not gonna get Birmingham either so it would be a wasted insurance choice right?

Exeter said that very occasionally they might let you in if you miss your offer by a small amount

If you really want to do Medicine, have a Med Insurance. You cannot be certain that Brum would reject you below grades, and therefore you could be turning down a Medicine place.

This isnt something that any Uni can promise in advance. No-one has a clue exactly what will happen with A level results in any given year, and how many of their Firm applicants will get their grades. There may be a few spaces, there might not be any at all. And even if there are, its up to that Uni to decide how they fill them. They may prioritise those with Mitigating Circumstances, and/or with Contextual offers, or they may just take high achievers from their Waiting List to fill any gaps. So, its isnt that they would 'let you in' if you miss your grades - its far more complicated than that.

Sorry I typed that in a rush, I didn’t mean literally let you in. I’m aware it’s more complicated I just meant I spoke to someone on the open day and they said it’s happened before but it occasional and based on the circumstances obviously

Any Uni doing this has problems filling the course - if they didnt, they would not need to be offering you a sweetener to encourage you to pick that as your Firm. Do you really want to go to a Uni that you wouldnt pick unless they were giving you a '20% off' incentive?

yeah but for medicine?? I can’t imagine any university is gonna have a problem filling places for medicine as it’s probably the most competitive course there is. i don’t think it’s a bribe more them just doing what they do for other courses they may be struggling to fill for continuity purposes. People don’t need to be bribed to accept an offer for medicine I wouldn’t have thought

In this situation, they are fed up with being the Insurance choice - and the uncertainty that that brings re. numbers. Its still a bribe.

I mean I’m not going to firm it just for that my question was more about the actual unis and what they offer

They are very different PBL versus integrated. City campus in a large multicultural city versus a much smaller city plus random years in a town in Cornwall. It depends what you want from your 5 years, learning preference, type of lifestyle you want.
