What do u do in a gap year?

Hi

There’s a high possibility i may be taking a gap year and reapply for med next year. What do ppl usually do in a gap year? I already have work exp in a hospital, i have work exp online, i have volunteered for healthwatch and i have tutoring exp too. Would this be enough to reapply next year or do i need to do something else during my gap year? I might be employed and tutor in schools for the year, but would it be better to do smth in care homes instead? Im so confused idk wht to do. Would med schools care if i didn’t do smth in my gap year? What have you all done if u took gap years?

Thanksss

Relax, people take gap years for many different reasons. Don’t do things for the sake of it, do things because they will help add to your skills which you can show off in an interview. You don’t have to do a bunch of crazy things, do a couple volunteering things work experience and most importantly, have some fun and relax. It’s the one year you’re not going to be stressed with work, whether that be jobs or university. Maybe pick up a new hobby or something, enjoy your time off  👍🏼

I suggest that you do things for their own sake. Travel, read, learn a new thing, work in something unrelated to your career aspirations. Don't rot in bed.

This is my friends’ experience, not mine. Some people choose to take a complete break. They go on vacation, or just stay home with their family. Others like to stay busy, so they take a temporary job or learn something new. Block Blast

Hello!

I can't speak specifically for med students, but I will say that for me, taking a break from academics for a year was incredibly valuable for my mental health along with general life skills. I worked in retail for most of the year alongside some volunteering. I saved most of the money I earned (which was a huge benefit for when I joined uni as I didn't have to worry about budgeting until second year!) but I also spent some of it on going travelling, spending time with friends, etc. I also did my best to learn some quick and easy recipes so that moving to uni wouldn't come as a shock to the system.

I hope you have a fun and productive gap year if that is what you end up doing!

In my gap year I worked full time at a commercial estate agents specialising in the fried fish industry (aka an estate agents for primarily fish and chip shops). I had my own house so I had bills to pay.

My daughter is currently on her gap year working part time at Greggs in order to save up money for uni.
