The Student Room Group

Ivy league extra curricular

Hi,
I am an A level student doing Maths, computer science, physics, and economics. I wanted to see some advice and guidance on what extracurricular and projects should I do to use my CV currently I have been spending a lot of time in a sikh temple doing a lot of volunteering; I’m a house captain and president of a student committee which has organised around 2 to 3 events scaling between 100 to 200 people; I am on the varsity team for volleyball and basketball, I have been a training partner for netball. I found it MUN in our school.

I plan to learn something related to AI, economics, data science etc. In universities such as Harvard MIT and Stanford.
I’m currently working on SAT, IELTS and SMO (Singapore math Olympiad).

How can I post my CV and what thing should I add on to be able to get accepted into the top universities!

you'll be fine - ensure straight A*/A across the board - if you get onto the national Olympiad team and achieve any degree of success, entrance with suitable ec's and references becomes a whole world more likely.

i strongly disagree. Unless u are an international champion in olympiads or an olympics level athlete, no one will "be fine" in Ivy league admissions. theres a reason their rejection rates are over 95percent. if u think 95 percent of applicants wont have these same grades or ECs then u have got to be joking. A couple THOUSAND have perfect SAT scores with even more having a 4.0 gpa. BTW this isnt meant to discredit or put the OP down. I js dont want u to get comfortable thinking u have done enough and u start relaxing. Theres thousands of kids like u with the same dream, so keep evolving amd bettering ur ECs and essays to the very last second

Naturally. My point was more tailored to the fact that the student stands within the Singaporean Olympiad Team and success from such an acclaimed standpoint would aid in admission I imagine. While nobody is "fine", the mindset that it is Ivy League or bust is one riddled with fallacy. Students cannot guarentee anything - but the range of EC's achieved by OP and presumably perfect grades is close to what is feasible to achieve. Combined with strong essays and references, the majority of students will indeed attend top schools - Ivies or not.

Good stats, 50:50 chance I'd say of getting rejected from all Ivys. PLEASE apply to some other ones like NYU, Umich, Duke, CMU, UCLA, even ones like USC. The education quality, and the salary after graduation isn't that different. For example, when it comes to salary, NYU students learning business/econ or engineering literally makes same or even more than harvard.

I would say it is always above 90% chance of being rejected as an international student to Ivies - unless you go for early decision with schools that offer it.
You have to assume that all Harvard applicants have top-notch stats, and having top grades is just a pre-requisite.
Extracurriculars have to be really strong, like national-level Olympiads wins, national-level sports involvement, personal projects that are both linked to the proposed major and have a verifiable community impact.
You can also get some extra points for being a first-generation/low-income/LGBT etc.
At the end of the day, admissions are trying to select a well-balanced student body, and if they just recruit top academics, it will result in a class of clones with not much of a balance.

Hi, first off well done for all you've done! I'd say apply for pre-college programmes, Stanford has some AI ones open till next week, NYU pre-college is open and Rice always have courses rolling. Make sure your submitting scholarship/financial aid forms too because they get insanely expensive and thus (IMO) not worth the "prestige". Take advantage of the work experience opportunities here in the tech industry, they'll look great since most companies in Singapore are also international firms. Also begin thinking about how AI relates to your work/interests, especially in the local community. Can AI enhance people management for large events, what are the ethical/religous implications of sentient AI? Also, starting some sort of applying abroad society at your school helping each other out is quite a good idea. Schoolhouse have great programmes and you can send your portfolio to lots of T20s. Overall good luck!!
