UCL English Language Requirement

Hi!

I am an international student and I applied for Law LLB at UCL this year, which is a Level 4 English Language Requirement course. I do the IB and English A Lang Lit SL, which means I need a 7 on it to meet the language requirement. However, I am currently predicted a 6 for it, which is the grade UCL have received in my application, meaning I would not meet the English language requirement.

Does this mean I am ineligible for the offer (meaning I get rejected automatically) as I don’t meet the language requirement?

I did read on the UCL website that all conditions, including language requirements, must be met by 31 August 2025. Could this mean I can receive an offer without currently meeting the language requirement score? Then, could I meet the conditions by getting a 7 on English A in my IB finals or meet the IELTS score offer?

Given that you are "currently predicted a 6", then if they were happy with the rest of your application and wanted to make you an offer, they'd simply make achieving a 7 (or IELTS equivalent) a condition of the offer.

However, one thing which worries me slightly is that you say that 6 "is the grade UCL have received in my application". They know that's a prediction, right?

Thanks for the reply. To answer your worry: Yes, UCL are aware it is a predicted grade. That’s good to hear then.

Hi once again! Funnily, just today UCL sent me an offer with the condition of getting a 7 on English or IELTS equivalent. So you were right!

So for anyone reading, you do not need the English requirement grade right now, you need it just before 31 August.

Hello, currently in the same position. I’m holding a conditional offer for dentistry at university of Portsmouth. Any ideas regarding how to prepare for the test? My English are really good but I’ve heard scoring a 7 is really hard. Thank you x

Hi there,

Congratulations on your conditional offer!

I found it helpful to use the online preparation resources provided by the official IELTS website, which gives sample questions and tests, and videos. Here is the link to their preparation resources: Preparation Resources | IELTS

I hope this helps 🙂

So we just accept the conditional offer for now? What worries me is not meeting the requirements after I accept the offer. And it won't be financially viable for me to retake another test

Yes you can start accepting and declining offers. Just make sure that the offer you accept is at the university you wanna go the most. Don’t worry about retaking the test cause you’re sabotaging yourself subconsciously. Make sure you prepare very good and you’ll have the grades you want first time
P.S do you guys know if universities don’t mind IELTS academic being obtained online ?

Hi there!

Some universities won't mind, as I myself was originally going to take mine online after receiving confirmation from my university that it was permitted, but I ended up booking a spot at a test centre after my online attempt failed due to technical issues.
I would highly recommend contacting the universities you have applied to about taking your IELTS test online before booking it.

Good luck with your test! 🙂

Is this true only for UCL or for all universities? It is not clear whether I need to take it (US citizen so I don't need it for a visa but some universities are requiring it as I am not studying in English).
