How to become a headteacher

It has always been a thing I'm determined to let my confidence to grow upwards towards. Could someone give any good advice on how to become a good headteacher or the stages or promotion I should watch out for to get to this?

Where are you at the moment on the path to becoming a headteacher?

Are there any opportunities to gain some pastoral responsibility
Hi @Giveaclue3 ,

It's amazing that you have ambitions to become a headteacher and there are so many avenues of professional development to explore within teaching.

As a ECT, you could look out for opportunities to develop your skills with new qualifications in the coming years - sometimes, schools will be able to support their teaching staff using government levies or CPD budgets.

With over 1,000 teachers and school leaders studying with us each year, the University of Buckingham are one of the country’s leading providers of teacher training and professional development. We have 20+ courses available with flexible delivery to help you level up, no matter where you are in your career - find out more here!

Another thing you could do is build your network - attend school conferences and events to make connections with other school staff and leaders. You could also look into mentoring - having a mentor that has achieved your dreams supporting you through your own career can be invaluable!

If you've got your PGCE, we offer an MEd Education Leadership and Management which has been specifically designed for those who wish to pursue a career in school leadership.

If you have further questions, our Admissions team would be delighted to hear from you and to help you can contact them at [email protected].

The advice I would offer is to play the long game. A lot is made of fast tracking "the best" candidates but as an older (and maybe wiser???) person, I now see just how naïve and lacking in experience I was in my 20s and 30s. For me, the best head teachers are the best teachers and the only way to do that is to cut your teeth in the classroom. As you gain more experience you will encounter the problems and experience the successes of the classroom. That then gives you a cause to rise up and make real changes for the better.

I can't help but feel that younger teachers who rise quickly are playing at being senior leaders rather than making genuine positive changes and improvements. They push through changes which take up everyone's time but have little, no or negative impacts because they haven't been thought though or have been poorly designed.

The other thing to consider is that once you reach head teacher level, there are few further development opportunities and the nature of the job means your time is probably limited. For example, I heard that Heads in Manchester can get their full pension allowance after 5 years as an incentive - and incentive to stay on for at least 5 years!

So think carefully about your motivations and aims. You should want to be a head because you want to change and improve the lives of our young people, not because your ego likes the idea of being a head. Take your time and do it properly. There are so many terrible heads out there who are there for ego, not to make change. Don't be one of them.

Good luck!
