Quitting my Job

Hi guys i am think about quitting my job as they are not treating me with much respect. I work as a Kitchen Porter in a pub, and I have been nothing but hard-working and loyal to then yet they seem to give more praise to other employees compared to myself.

And I just had enough I have not been progressed onto other skills as surely once you are good as a KP your promoted to bartender I'm not sure if that the case.

But their manager who is 18 years of age gets to be progressed onto other tasks and I'm sure some of the staff have. I have been there since I started fixing up their pub. Since it was complete garbage from the beginning.

Since then I have been KP for 4 years now nothing has changed in terms of progressing other skills being treated lack of respect. They just seem to think I live across the road and I think they think oh well its really easy for you to get here.

We as other people have to travel. I'm not sure partley if that's the reason they think that might be wrong. But yeah I'm quitting had enough of it job applications are bull **** but still applying myself hopefully I get lucky.

Any of you guys been in a similar situation?

I am sorry to hear of your frustrations. Have you talked to your boss about lack of progress?

It is usually best not to leave a job before you have another lined up.

They may not realise how you feel. They may not know that you want to progress (especially if you have never said anything to them or given them the impression that you might want to.
Speak to your boss first. Let him/her know what you want to progress to other jobs as well. Then see what happens. Then if nothing changes you can start applying for other jobs.

Well I have mentioned I wanted to do bartending I have mentioned to them before. But with management in which they are young employees who have lack of experience in managing.

Said well if you wanted to do it you'd need to coins and cash in which I have no experience of doing and doing deserts etc, which is fair enough. But I could always stick to pouring pints.

Which I have seen people do In the pub both KP and pour pints. So they are aware of that I'm wanting to do something else but its more the fact they are focusing on other staff member that is doing different tasks who is the manager.

Which is fair enough as he is the manager even though he's 18 and its like they are favourtised towards him and the chef treats him nicer than me in which is obvious.

Obviously, I shouldn't care as much but it does hurt me a bit when I done everything for them but not have been promoted or been at least an assistant manager or something you know.

Might be overthinking about it but you know It just lowers my confidence

Sadly not all employees are equal, certain people simply have an easier time being liked or spotted, or someone else has spotted potential in them and their being groomed for a different role. Likewise, some people could work for decades in a role with no one ever considering them a good fit as a leader for advancement, it's never a promotion that's assumer or just given with time.

(giving the wrong person some power over their colleagues can really mess a workplace up fast so managers are often cautious. At one of the stores in my work a few months ago they got told that a deeply unpopular shift leader they hoped they had got rid off was getting transferred back, 5 people quit as soon as they were told this and 3 more quit the first day they worked with her. Massive disruption and loss to the business because they made 1 bad promotion)

So is it just simply some people can get lucky/better at their job. if I quit as we have a limited number of porters and if I quit now it would potentially cost them business? But its like someone can easily do my job better than I can even though I can confidently say I am really good at it.

Not to sound arrogant about it but at this point, I'm ready to move on to something else whether or not they want to take it on board or that's up to them but figured they have time to focus on others upgrade their potential.

Oh no I get why you're annoyed. If it's been 4 years in KP with no chance at anything else, and you've made it clear you're looking to develop and progress and they're just not having it I wouldn't blame you for looking for better opportunities elsewhere at all. All I'm really getting at is it's possible to bash your head against a wall with employers for years and for right or wrong they'll just never see you that way.

Yea definitely find another job even if it’s a KP , maybe look into other institutions like 5 star hotels where most have KP managers so you’re not really the one doing the main manual work and you’ll get better pay , benefits and hotel room discount. And 3 nights free with your family at any of there hotels a year and much more . I’m not sure where you’re based but definitely look at 5star hotels . Another thing is join an agency where you can learn bartending experiences . Agencies like of to work offer full free training on bartending, event waiting etc and provide uniform and you can progress and work your way up with high pay . When I first started bartending years ago I had no experience but still did it and was able to learn quite fast on the job . But yea deffo secure a new job before quitting .

Yeah that is a painful part of applying for a job whereas other people are applying for the same thing. And yet you are lucky to even get a response back the same ******** repsonse comebacks im sorry you are not a suitable canidate.

Even though alot of people would kill to be in posisition i am in i just had enough but im jut gonns hsve to pull through and keep going. I feel kind of spoilt in a way. But i am looking for better opportunities.

So I think my work notices that I want to quit so they might want to let me go sooner rather than later. But rather work somewhere else where hard work is more appropriate than working with a ******** chief. Who likes to be nicer to other staff.

In most of the hotels that I’ve worked in with agencies at 5star luxury hotels , the KP’s are treated the best even at times they’re treated with more respect that actual waiting staff and bartenders as long as the KP is doing their job obviously. And there’s usually a team of Kps so one might be allocated to cutlery only etc . I’ve even seen some kps listening to music on there headphones and not having to communicate because everything is so structure and it’s like their in their own world . With agencies as well most KP don’t actually work their full hours but get paid for the full duration but they’ve be book from let’s say 11am - 8pm but won’t actually star their physical job until there needed and this is easier after service starts . And because agencies are mostly for events kps only end up washing let’s say 15-30 plates depending on the event size x 3 for starter, main and dessert and the machinery they have makes everything look so easy for them lol . But don’t leave until you’ve secure a role else where

I will have look through and see what I can apply to all I can do is apply to 1,500 applications jobs and still no luck but and barely even a response. Obviously quitting your job without another one is bad but at this point I Aint getting another lined up any time soon.

Think the best situation is to quit if it's making me miserable. But I don't want staff to notice that even if they seem to have. But I just had enough of it and also hoovering the entire pub with a *****y one is freutsting as hell tempted to bring my own lol.

They don't seem research when buying quality hoovers. I don't want make this enough complaint but thermy are just **** ones since I broke the past one by accident. It was old and banged up anyways
