Jobless and Poor

This is totally like a first world problem and I understand that people have it a lot worse but just hear me out.

I'm currently on a gap year before I go to uni, and for the last like 7 months, I've been looking for a job. I've had no luck at getting one and I've been using my ISA to still hang out with friends and pay for stuff I need. Obviously I still live at home and don't pay bills, so I'm not in dire need of money. Anyways, I recently used all of my ISA to pay for driving lessons as I want to pass before I go away for 3 years. This means that I have no money and no job.

My question is, how do I cope with not being able to do anything but sit at home? My other friends either have jobs or rich parents so they hang out pretty often. But more and more I'm missing out on being able to do things because I simply can't afford it and it's really getting to me. I've applied to 30 jobs in just 2 weeks and still nothing, but I don't think I can carry on like this until September. Any advice at all would be helpful, thank you

Have you looked around for any jobs on a bus route by any chance or anything?

I have a bus route near me which is LONG (takes a full two hours from one end to another) and passes through a few towns and a theme park, which is always busy and they will be opening soon for the spring and by default, restaurants.

Do you have any theme parks, live near a major town centre or have access to a bus route by any chance which passes through major towns or has any popular restaurants like a Harvester or Toby Carvery, maybe even a Nandos or something on the route?

If so, have a look and email them with your CV, provide a basic template which applies to all and just chop and change things in it I.e Hi, my name is x and I am looking for a job in customer service and was hoping yourselves at xxx have any openings going etc…

Hope you find a job soon!

Trust me when I say finding your first job is an absolute pain, it took me a full year and a pandemic to find my first job after I graduated… just keep looking! Even I’m looking for a job now and I’ve been employed for three years at a hospital previously!

It will happen, just give it time!

I don't mean yo sound harsh but you should have planned your gap year before taking it. You are not alone in struggling to find something to do. You have to continue to apply for jobs. I would suggest volunteering, so that your CV looks decent for the future.

A bit vague but supermarkets are generally always hiring due to turnover and are often looking more for an applicant to tick the right availability and 'customer service' answers rather than have exp

(I drive for one of them)

There is plenty of unskilled work out there. Are you being fussy about what you do, or is there something wrong with your applications? Go and talk to your school careers person - they are still there to help you, and can read/advise on your CV and applications etc

Google the name of any supermarket or big restaurant or hotel chain and 'jobs' and you will find jobs being advertised :
Search Jobs - Boots Jobs - Career Opportunities with Boots
Roles - Asda Jobs
Search and Apply | Whitbread Careers - pubs/hotels
and Summer Jobs for Students | Find The Perfect Summer Holiday Job

Festival and Sport Events work - All Vacancies - hap Solutions Group and Festival Jobs and Work

And - remember that many hospitality jobs are 'live-in' - it doesnt have to be just 'local. so be adventurous :

Job Vacancies at All Caravan parks and Campsites

Try fast food places such as mcdonalds. They take on a lot of students.

Where have you been looking? What websites are you using for job searches? Glassdoor is the one we've found the most useful.

My son (17) works at McDonald's - it took him about 2 months to find that job - he's been there around 16 months so far.
My daughter (19, in her gap year) works at Greggs - again around 2 months of applying and interviews. She's been there 6 months.

Have you not signed onto UC whilst you're job hunting? That's the first thing you should have done when you turned 18 (or as soon as you left college / sixth form at least). Aside from paying you money (obviously) they pay for interview clothes so you can actually look smart, and they pay for a monthly bus pass whilst you're job hunting so you can get to interviews. You can check the job boards in the UC office as there's often things posted on there too. They can also check out your CV for you to make sure it's formatted well, and they can give you mock interviews as well to help you practice.

One small word of caution about the jobcentre is that the younger you are the more keen they often are to immediately enrol you in something/anything. This can be a good thing or it can be something totally unsuitable and needs a bit bit of assertiveness to stand up for yourself. A lot of teenagers especially don't always know what they should be saying no to, like if an adviser starts a pitch of 'do you like working with the public?' its wise to say no as otherwise you might find yourself shoehorned into working security at the jobcentre like mine did 🤨

That's a fair point
