DISCUSS THE TYPES OF CONFORMITY AND THE EXPLANATION (16MARKS)
Conformity refers to a type of social influence where a person changes their views to fit in with the majority. There are 3 types of conformity: compliance which refers to change in public view but not private views act more temporarily and this is the shallowest form of conformity. For example, a person may say they like a certain music band, but they dislike it just to be accepted by the majority. Identification which refers to change in public views but not in private view only when a group is present. Internalisation refers to change in public and private views, and this is the deepest form of conformity this is normally associated with religious belief.
One strength of the definition of compliance is the research support. For example Asch conducted a study when a group of participants had to compare the length of the lines to the standard lines and found that many participants went along with the obvious wrong answer and when Asch asked in post experiment interview why the participants changed the answers and it was due to avoid disapproval from the rest of the group which shows and example of conformity. Later Asch asked the participants to write the answer of a piece of paper and found conformity decrease 12.5%. This shows that conformity is due to the fear of rejection
2 explanations of conformity: Normative social influence which refers to change of views in order to be accepted. Informative social influence which refers to change of views in order to be right. One strength for the explanation of informative social influence would be the research support. For example a study was conducted by Lucas et al which students were given mathematic problems which ranged from easy to hard questions and it was found conformity increased when the questions were more difficult .when asked that when the maths questions were easy the participants had confidence in their intelligence but when the questions were harder it become unclear for some students and their relied on the answer given in order to be right, Overall the study provides us with a clear explanation. A counterpoint is that its unclear if NSI or ISI work at research studies for example Asch found reduced conformity when another dissenting participants presented and this reduce the power of NSI by providing social support so some suggest there may be an alternative source of information One weakness for the explanation of normative social influence is that it doesn’t affect everyone behaviour in the same way. For example, people which are less concerned with being accepted are less affected by NSI than those compares who care about being accepted in a society or a group of people. Those who needed to be associated with other are called naffilitors and found a greater number of naffilators in research. McGhee and Teevan found students in need more likely to conform. Overall, this explanation limits the external validity
