Uni Degree

Hi all,

Im currently in Year 12 and beginning to look at Uni degrees. I’m taking double business and drama. I’m leaning towards a degree in a business area eg hospitality, fashion, PR etc. However, I am also considering a different degree in journalism, agriculture or even anthropology. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi,

If there's any companies specialising in these jobs near your area, I suggest you email them to ask if you can do some work experience (shadowing/following what they do in a day/week) for the upcoming summer so that you can experience what they do in a realistic day-to-day life. This may help you to narrow down what you want to do or what you might not want to do. Since you have interests in a variety of pathways, it's best you also diversify where you ask for work experience. Hope this helps!

Book some uni open days and go to the course talks and chat to staff and students. This will help you work out what course really appeals to you.

Which qualifications are you taking - a BTEC in Business, and an A level in Drama?

Hi @sharkhappy8484;

It's great that your already looking at courses. Personally I'm in my second year studying business and management, so hopefully my advice can be helpful

Business studies
Personally, I've found studying business really enjoyable. On my course, they prioritised building a strong foundational knowledge before introducing more complicated concepts. Many business degrees provide the opportunity for a placement year, however you would have to check at your desired university. If your interested in the entrepreneurial side of business, you could attend a university that invests in supporting student enterprises. Personally I got an abundance of advice and a grant of £600 to set up my business.
Business degrees are extremely versatile as you learn a broad skill set. Some career examples are: manager, consultant, marketing, finance, human resources and more.

How to choose the right course
- Career Goals - Research into various careers your interested in. See the type of work you would have to conduct and possibly contact local business to do a short work experience if possible. Look at the type of degree you would need for your desired career
- University - If you have a particular university in mind, check what courses align best with your personal goals.
- Modules - Check the modules being taught for your course across various university's. This will give you an idea of what exactly you will be studying.

Some additional factors may include:
- Placement year
- Theory or practical
- Assessment types

The main goal should be to pick what you enjoy most as you will be dedicating lots of time to studying. My biggest recommendation would be attending university open days so you can talk with current students and tutors who may help identify which course may best fit your goals.

I hope this helps, please feel free to ask me any questions,
-Sophia (Business and Management)

Hi there @sharkhappy8484; , just to add on to what the others have said, I personally think trying out some work experience over the holidays is a great idea to get a better grasp on what working in different industries is like. Once you have narrowed down a handful of unis you are interested in, I would recommend going for Open Days to speak to lecturers and current students to get a better understanding of what the course is like and if this uni/ course is suited to you! I hope this helps 🙂

Hello there!

As a Year 12 student exploring university degrees, it’s great that you’re considering multiple fields. With double Business and Drama, you have a mix of analytical and creative skills, which opens up several career paths. If you’re leaning towards a business-related degree, areas like Hospitality, Fashion Business, and Public Relations (PR) would align well with your current studies, as they involve strategic thinking, communication, and industry-specific knowledge.

A degree in Hospitality Management would prepare you for roles in event planning, hotel management, and tourism. Fashion Business blends business strategy with the creative industry, covering marketing, branding, and retail management. Public Relations (PR) focuses on media relations, branding, and corporate communication, making it ideal if you enjoy networking and storytelling.
On the other hand, your interest in Journalism, Agriculture, and Anthropology suggests a curiosity about storytelling, social sciences, or sustainability. Journalism would be a strong choice if you enjoy research, writing, and media, while Anthropology explores cultures, societies, and human behavior. Agriculture, though quite different, could be a fascinating option if you have an interest in sustainability, food production, or environmental management.

Coventry University offers
BA Journalism - https://www.coventry.ac.uk/course-structure/ug/fah/journalism-ba-hons/
BA International Relations - https://www.coventry.ac.uk/course-structure/ug/fah/international-relations-ba-hons/

To help you decide, consider gaining experience through internships, volunteering, or online courses to see which area excites you the most. Whether you choose business, journalism, or a more specialized field, pick a degree that aligns with your strengths and interests to keep your career options open.

I hope this helps!
Good luck!
