Getting into Dentistry Resits ??

Hi, I recently decided I want to study Dentistry, but I feel behind and unsure of my options. I’m currently in Year 12 studying Biology, Psychology, and Health & Social Care, but I plan to restart Year 12 with Biology, Chemistry, and Psychology to meet entry requirements. I also want to resit GCSE Maths (I got a 5 but want at least a 6/7). At a dentistry conference, I was told some universities don’t accept resits, which has left me really confused. Should I go ahead and apply to universities that allow resits, or would I be better off applying abroad? Has anyone been in a similar situation? I’d really appreciate any advice!

Ahha u r in a pickle. If I may know ur GCSEs in a whole ?

Okay let’s start gcse resits I would personally say its fine just avoids ones that don’t accept it majority do. Now the problem is that a level resit of bio. Majority and top ones don’t accept a level resits even yr 12 is still considered a resit and u do need good GCSEs. Now there is limited uni for dentistry and I know this cuz I have 2 unis that I fit in for dentistry and only 2 I see is fit out of all and I resitted both GCSEs and a levels. If you could tell me. More about ur academic background I could help u more and do u have AS official exams ?

I got an 8 in English language. 9-8 in science. 9 in English lit. I also got an 8 in history and then PE and photography was a 5. And sorry I’m not sure what you mean by official AS exams? I’m still in year 12 currently but in my recent mocks in January I got an A in biology and A* in psychology. Health and social care was coursework but my minimum target grade for that was an A.

My situation genuinely is confusing because when I picked my alevel subjects I just picked what I liked and I had no idea I wanted to do dentistry until recently 🥲🥲

U have mocks in end of years do u so may/june. Some schools offer official AS exams and some don’t for predicted grades. Which exams r use for ur guys predicted grade so is it mocks or AS exams or past AS exams or how do the decide it.

honestly its strange why change now when u have actually even have good gcse grades better than mine!! Honestly I don’t why you pick those a levels with those good GCSE. Yes u r limited and more limited because few offer dentistry in the uk. U could do medicine as more so do this but the. Prob is ur a level resit for bio cause ur doing it again

Yeah i have mocks again next week and in June which are for predicted grades not official AS exams. And honestly looking back I don’t know why I didn’t choose chemistry first time round doing health and social care just means I can’t apply anywhere basically it makes me annoyed 😭 that’s why I want to retske year 12 so I can do biology and chemistry and have more options to apply for. And I also had like no support from teachers or family or anyone and I had no idea I could even get into uni until the middle of year 11 when I started focusing on my academics. As for doing medicine I think dentistry fits more with my goals. Can I ask what unis do you think I should look at or where to find information or what I should do for now 🥲 also what year are you in!! Thanks

Okay so I think based on ur GCSEs defo resit maths u need a 7. So u have Plymouth Bristol Sheffield u need 6 As so maybe worth resitting 2. So u have currently now 1 uni. If u resit maths 2 uni if u resit maths another one then any other one that is three and the 4th one is confusing cuz they don’t accept resits and they want heavily GCSEs like KCL but I am not sure if u r elegibke for KCL foundation year for medicine. So see look how limited u r . I do have a guide in strategic application which tell u r the requirement including ucat thresholds 2024 entry ones.

Hey, I know it’s late in the year but do you think you would be able to pick up a-level chemistry now or self study? It is a demanding subjects but you would have the summer holiday to catch up (assuming that your school doesn’t make you guys do AS exams)

Hi. I think I would suggest contacting the universities that accept resits by email or by phoning them to see if they also accept retaking year 12. Then at least you know where you stand in terms of which unis you could apply to.

There's an article from tsr on dental school requirements, so you could start by having a look there (but also check the website of the respective uni as the article might be slightly outdated):

I don’t think my school would let me do that, unless I take alevel chemistry privately but I doubt I can afford that either 🥲🥲

Pretty inaccurate.
For maths GCSE, yes they should probably resit but most unis require just a grade 6 in maths.
Plymouth asks for 7 grade 4s, which would be a C grade.
Bristol asks for a 7 in maths and a 4 in English. They have no other GCSE entry requirements.
And what are you going on about with the 1 uni 2 uni stuff??

When guys like u don’t really pay attention . My neves breaks. All of what u said is true which is literally what I said but the OP is restricted to 2 unis if he resitted maths. If he resitted more I gave him likely unis because all the other uni score GCSEs and a levels which is Sheffield and they want 6As. Now all other unis score GCSEs like KCL for dent however there is foundation year I am not sure if he is eligible for that .

My neves breaks when people spread misinformation 🙄
You said Plymouth, Bristol and Sheffield require 6 As, which is wrong. Only Sheffield requires 6 As. Plymouth and Bristol don't.
