The Student Room Group

Sheffield accommodation

I’m looking to go to Sheffield uni in september and would feel more comfortable in a single sex flat - although some say that single sex tends to be less social and not as good is this true ??

also considering that you can select the exact room you want to be in does that mean you can select your room based on who else is going to be in the flat if that makes sense ?

Yes single sex flats don't tend to be as sociable overall. However, it is possible to request to be with either mixed sex or single sex. It is also possible to pick what age group you want to live with and how many people you want to live as well. With regards being able to select the exact room you want is more down to being able to choose where in the flat you want to be based rather than being based on who else is going to be there.
Hi,

I would say honestly go with what you feel comfortable with, as I know this can be a big thing for people, but I would say from past experiences mixed flats are more common and are sociable, due to the varying individuals who live there. But, that said, if you are sure you would like a single sex flat then go for that, you being comfortable in your new surroundings is the most beneficial thing! Maybe consider chatting to a few different ambassadors, to get a feel for their experiences and their opinions, so you don't feel you are making the decision on your own.
