The Student Room Group

opinions on my GCSE choicse

Hi to all of those who've done their gcse exams and have some advise that they are happy to share,
I have to pick my options on Monday (Sunday/tomorrow to finalise and be confident with my options), and I want some proper advise and guidance, so that I can make any adjustments that will save my exams in Y11.
Please do be hard about what you think - it doesn't have to be all suger-coated cuz I just need to know what I need to do:

Maths
English Literature
English Language
Biology
Chemistry
Physics
French (compulsory)
RS (we have to pick at least one humanities subject, history/RS/geography, but I'm crap at History and not sure between geography or RS - some comments in the student room said that RS is easy marks compared to Geo, but was hard and boring, and that Geo will help you more in the future)
Computer Science
Business

from what i heard from my friends RS is rlly hard, theres this guy in my year who got all 9s in the mocks apart from RS so geo imo is easier

Computer science and business are great choices if you enjoy them - I take those both too and they are 2 of my favourite subjects! I would say that you should pick Geo/RS depending on what you're more interested in in general because the more you enjoy it the more likely you'll "want" to revise it more

Hi! I'm assuming that you have to do maths, english lit, english lang, bio, chem, physics, and french. So, these are my opinions on the others (by the way, I'm in year 11 and recently done my mocks and got all 8s/9s)...

RS/Geography: I do both. Personally, I find geography slightly easier and I think it is definitely more appreciated in the future (at my school you have to do either geo or history, and rs is seen as less important). Geography is lots more time consuming when it comes to exams because there is lots of information you have to remember for the case studies, but if you're willing to put the effort in it's not hard as it's mainly about memorising things tbh. I think there's less to remember for RS but you need to be aware of lots of religious teachings and arguments you could write about in the exam (you will need to remember quotes from the bible, quran, etc. depending on which religions your school studies). RS is much more about essay writing skills so it depends if this is your strong suit. I know lots of people who struggle to finish in time in the exam so you need to be able to write fast. Honestly, for RS and geography, just do whatever you think you'll enjoy more and be better at in the future.

Computer Science: I do computer science and LOVE it!! There's not too much theory too remember but some people get bored at the thought of learning about computers for hours, so just make sure you're genuinely interested in it. And you need to be confident with programming - although I promise you will improve massively at this throughout years 10 and 11. I managed to get a 9 in the mocks without much revision as it's mainly about understanding and practice not memorisation. And it's one of the most highly viewed gcses as well so definitely a good choice!! Highly recommend!!

Business: Personally, I don't do business. It was one of my top choices that I was choosing between but my teachers advised me against it because it's not one of the most academic gcses so won't be quite as highly viewed. But, obviously that depends on your situation and what you want to do in the future! And I know lots of people who are predicted 9s in business (with lower grades in other subjects) so it could be a slightly easier choice.

I hope that helps! Feel free to ask me anymore questions! Apologies I typed this really quickly haha

RS is easier. Lots of writing, tbf around the same as Geo, but if you’ve studied Christianity since y7, you’ll be fine.

CS is gonna be hard I reckon. Half my class has dropped out and the remaining cohort of my class is on a grade 4/5 at the moment. Good luck!
