PPE😭

I’m currently a year 12 student, who’s doing Englit, Maths and Economics and i’m quite interested in doing PPE for uni. I’m just quite uncertain of whether or not should I take further maths as a fourth subject now cause most of the applicants to LSE had 4 subjects💔. Other than that I would lovee to have some suggestions on MOOCs or work experiences for me PS!🫶

hey!
I would say with this subject choice just double check that PPE is really what you want to do - there are a WHOLE load of applicants who often don't know what to do so they go for PPE and most of these applicants are unsuccessful.

In terms of a fourth A-Level I would say if you can survive FM maybe try but consider that LSE is uneblievably competitive so I don't think they're at all the standard for A-Levels.

Work experience isn't awfully important - although I did work at the Treasury / start my own business but IDK if I'll put that in my personal statement cause TBH I don't think they care alll toooo much.

Focus more on maybe research or reading to show why you want to do PPE. Work experience most unis dont give a crap about tbh

hope this helps
lmk if you need any further support w. your application

thank you so much for this!!!!!🫶
I just don’t want to be regret not trying fm even though it’s quite late now(i was soo indecisive last year cause i need to pay for a fourth Alevel and also i got a merit prize for girls maths challenge last year so i thought it might not be that necessary to take fm)
Do you have any suggestions of some degrees for me to consider?😭 Bcs rn i’m really interested in Econ and philosophy as subjects so i’m quite uncertain about careers and stuff😔.
oh and it’s such a relief to know that work experience is not that important🫶 i’ll just focus on reading now

Hi @lizzy193

If you particularly enjoy Economics and Philosophy, there are many universities that offer Economics and Philosophy degrees which may find you enjoy more than a PPE degree as you will be more specialized in Economics and Philosophy right from the start of the degree.

Alternatively, you could study something like a Maths and Philosophy degree or even just a Maths degree (and you can always take some modules in the Economics department as most universities do allow you to minor or to take modules in other departments). Though, these would more likely want FM A level. The reason why I say this is that you can always do an Economics Master following a Maths degree but not the other way round. If you are very mathematically inclined, you may find Economics is not as mathematical as you like. Economics does contain a fair bit of maths but it is quite applied.

I do study PPE so if you have any questions about studying PPE I can answer that. Of course, I can't answer specifically for other unis, only what my experience is of PPE at Southampton.

Hope this helps,

I think econ & philosophy joint degree sounds perfect for you!
In terms of careers I think any econ degree (joint with something else/otherwise) will open some great career opportunities for you! My advice is usually try and figure out roughly what career you want to do (or more importantly what you don't want to do) and use that to decide which courses would work for you.

If you want a job in finance/econ-related, you'll need a masters in econ BUT you don't necessarily need a Ba in econ and something else. For most careers, your BA will matter much BUT if you're chosing only by which subject do I like the most, you can always do a career-related degree later.
It's definitely not something I can advise on as such - as your degree choice is ultimately super personal to you!

If you have any more questions LMK!
Wishing you luck w. your application!!
