University choices for law?

I’m in year 12 and i currently study Law (BTEC), criminology, and ancient history. I’ve been looking into universities recently as I don’t want to leave it to the last moment. I want to study law.

1. Queens University Belfast: AAA
2. University of Liverpool: AAA
3. Ulster University (Belfast): AAB
4. Lancaster University: AAB
5. Liverpool John Moores University: ABB

All of them accept BTECS and applied diplomas.
I just wanted to know whether I was aiming too high and if i should replace one of the unis with a university that has lower entry requirements for my course? as a just incase? i’m not really sure.
Thanks 🙏

What are your expected / predicted grades?

You may think of the usual UCAS tactics: 1 or 2 aspirational uni choices (required grades a bit higher than your predicted grades), 2 uni choices with required grades similar/same as your predicted, and 1 to 2 safe choices (with required grades lower than your predicted).

If your predicted are AAB, I think your choices are reasonable. Maybe you could consider substituting Ulster with Cardiff, and substituting Liverpool John Moores with Royal Holloway.

If your predicted are AAA or higher, I suggest you re-thinking your choices.

You cannot just assume that non-A levels will be accepted and you need to check with individual Unis.
Most top Uni will only accept ether an BTEC Extended Diploma or will only accept a 'single' BTEC with minimum 2 A levels. Remember that Crim is not an A level - whatever you school tells you - and some Unis exclude it specifically for Law. Email them with the exact titles of your 3 qualifications and ask - before you apply.

Regardless of this, until you have your grade predictions, you can't pick 5 realistic choices. These choices might be realistic for AAA prediction, but not for AAB or ABB. And at this stage, you need to be planning Open Days, looking around Unis, and doing some careful thinking about the 'sort of Uni' where you will feel happiest, not picking actual choices.

Valid information, but you don’t need to be so harsh!

don’t worry i’ve looked at each individual uni, and i know crim isn’t a btec  , thank you for the advice and this isn’t my DEFINITE list this is just me thinking that if i somehow lock in i may be able to achieve it

so far a distinction in law, a/b in crim and b/c in ancient history, but i haven’t done my mocks yet (they’re this week) so this is just based off of my gcse results

i wanted to see if ljmu would be a good fit as i live right near it so it wouldn’t be too far of a drive to visit home, i definitely don’t want to be too close to home though thats why im not too keen on applying to edge hill, but the entry requirements are a lot lower so i might substitute one of the ones i’m thinking about with it as a ‘just in case’. i was actually looking at royal holloway a few weeks ago but im not sure if id be able to afford living in london thats why im more focused on the ones up north

Hi ane5ha!

Thankyou for your post! I did criminology at A-Level also and i really enjoyed it 😄 I am currently doing criminal law at LJMU as a first year and i was in the exact same position as you last year! I was stressing about getting the grades i needed. I would recommend sitting down with your A-Level teachers and asking them about your predicted grades and if you can be given any extra resources on topics you feel like you might be struggling with! I would also look for other universities and swap maybe one uni out if your really feeling like you will need it. I would also recommend having a look at doing an EPQ if that's something that your college is offering you, it really helped me with my UCAS points! I'm sure you will do amazing in your exams and get into the uni of your choice! If you want anything else or are interested in knowing about anything that can help your situation don't be afraid to get in touch or reply!

Have a good week!

Hello @ane5ha

I'm glad to hear you are considering Lancaster as one of your options to study Law. I myself am a 4th year LLB Law (Study Abroad) student so I feel I can offer some perspective as someone who was once in your position.
When I made my selections for universities, I think I just made sure that I had at least two universities that I was pretty much guaranteed to get into because of their grades. Then of these two universities, I insured one of them (Lincoln whose entry grades at the time I believe were BBB?) and firmed Lancaster for AAB. Luckily all went in my favour and I managed to achieve (D*D*A in Applied Science and Psychology A-Level).

From our website it says that "A levels at grade AB plus BTEC at D", meaning you would need to get a D in your BTEC Law and an A and B in your Criminology and and Ancient History (given that they are both A-Level qualifications).

I would really encourage you to visit all of your options if possible and make use of the great online resources a lot of them will have. A great virtual tour of Lancaster's Campus and what is available can be seen HERE.

I would also recommend you speak to one of our current students who study Law, you can ask them any questions you have HERE.

Taylor (Lancaster Uni Student Ambassador).
