Where would you pick?

Hi all,

Got my offers in for English Lit and my top three are UCL, Durham and Warwick. Durham, I love the course and of course it's a good university but I get the feeling that it's a bit tory boy (sorry, I'm not). Warwick, I loved everything about but feel like UCL and Durham are slightly more prestigious? I know people say that doesn't matter but I do think it matters what employers think of a university. UCL I like everything about but I'm drawn to a more campus based experience and obviously it's more expensive living in London. Would love any advice!

Given what you've said above, you should go for Warwick - as you "loved everything about" it and you're "drawn to a more campus based experience".

Although you "think it matters what employers think of a university", that fact that you feel "UCL and Durham are slightly more prestigious" means that you don't feel that there's a lot of difference, in terms of prestige, between them. So why compromise on the university you "loved everything about" for a "slight" difference in prestige?

Go to the place you liked the most. I went to UCL and found it a generally difficult place to study. Quite tough to make friends and a very competitive and international place. Obviously I don't know your background but it is very popular with people from wealthy bakgrounds as well. If that's the vibe you're looking for fine, but if it isn't I would go for Warwick.

I would also say Warwick because it’s clear that’s the one you love 😊 I’ve always been big on rankings too so I get it but if Warwick’s rank suddenly shot up, what would your answer be? numbers change year to year and in the long run it’s better to go with what’s best for you rather than what‘ll get everyone’s approval

will also add the harder the school, the tougher it is to stand out because EVERYONE is very bright, which leads to a lot of people being miserable, switching subjects/industries, or resenting their course. so what may seem risky can actually be to your benefit if you know you’d do your best there and get a 1st rather than have to fight tooth and nail at a tip top university and risk it not being enough

Thanks everyone this is really helpful advice. Went to the UCL offer holder day and thought the course looked great but the vibe was off for me (like poster above said - v international and wealthy but didn’t get a community vibe). Going to offer holder days at Warwick and Durham too but I’m defo erring towards Warwick right now.
