university of warwick

hi, i'm choosing between my offers for 2025 entry (life sciences) , i went to see warwick recently and it was really nice, but I'm still hesitant to turn down other offers. i have a few questions if any current or past students could answer them please?

- I saw the rootes store on campus, do people actually do their weekly shopping there or thats just for the odd bits? - im just aware that they may inflate prices because other shops might be too far away.
- How is the shared bathroom situation (I have heard the male perspective that it's really quite good, but would appreciate a female perspective too)
-How is the shared kitchen? I saw it was up to 13 people which is kinda a lot and i dont want to have to make food in one of those horror kitchens you see online 😭
- How is the social life? People say its in the middle of nowhere so there's nothing to do but I hear there's a club on campus? Do people actually go there?
-Average cost of the laundrettes there? I'm from London so its quite astronomical here, wondering if its the same there.
-Are the networking opportunities still good? I imagine its not the same as London lol but did people have a difficult time finding placements?
-How helpful was the uni in finding placements? I know certain unis leave you to go and figure it out but warwick seemed pretty proud of its affiliated companies.

I would appreciate any other notes too - the good and the bad!

Hi, I'm a female first year student at Warwick studying media - I'll have a go at answering your questions.
I was super anxious coming to uni, and hesitant about similar things, I'm in Cryfield standard so have to share a bathroom with 10 people, including guys and it's honestly okay, I thought it would be awful but you get used to it really quick and the bathrooms are cleaned Mon-Fri by a cleaner. The bathrooms in Cryfield are modern and nice, so it's quite convenient not having to clean a bathroom myself.

Rootes is just a top up shop place, most of us just get sweet treats from there and occasionally milk etc but there's Canon Shopping Park just on the edge of campus, which has a Tesco and Aldi - it's a 20 minute walk from Cryfield - you could get the bus there, or get your food delivered by Tesco but the walk isn't long and it's pretty much a walk entirely through campus as Tesco is just on the edge. But yes Rootes is more expensive, but not by much and nobody does their proper shop there.

I share my kitchen with 9 other people and it's fine - we have a cleaner once a week and if your kitchen isn't in an acceptable standard then you could be fined after strikes so that means most flats are generally quite clean and tidy. I'm a bit of a clean freak so I just make sure I wipe all the sides before I cook, occasionally you'll have to nag at your flatmates to be cleaner but most people will be. I haven't seen any kitchens as bad as some of the ones you might see on TikTok - ultimately it's up to the flat to stop it from getting that far, even if occasionally you have to clean up a mess that isn't yours, just be clear with your flatmates from the start that any kind of mess isn't cool.

The social life is okay, there's clubs in Leamington (Neon etc) so there's normally some form of a club most nights of the week, or society events and there's the campus club which does Pop! on a Wednesday and societies circle (drinking games) before which is really fun. There's loads of societies too which are super social and a few pubs on campus - there is always something to do to be honest but Warwick isn't as crazy social as some unis.

I think it's like £3.50 for the washing machine and the drum is massive so you only really need to use on, I never use the tumble dryer and just hang everything up in my room

I think networking is fine, there's loads of events and we have the Warwick Arts Centre which is really popular in the midlands so there's plenty of opportunity - in terms of placement, just get to know your tutors/lecturers well and they will help you with their connections and sorting a placement - ultimately if you're doing a placement through your course (which I am) they will support you in finding a good one.

Yeah, Warwick does encourage you to find your placement on your own, but your personal tutor will support you in doing so and if you can't find one/struggling you will get help - but yes, they are proud of their affiliates so it is helpful to get on with your department staff to use those connections.

This was so long but hopefully it's helpful, I was so worried coming to uni but I love Warwick. There's defo lonely and down times but I think that's part of uni life, but it's such a friendly uni with a good community. Try get involved in a society and push yourself out of your comfort zone, it will be worth it. Good luck!
