so as long as you have a quote for each paragraph that should be fine (so four) but it depends on how short the quotes are as you need to do a very deep analysis so if you have a short quote you might want to include another related one.

However too many quotes in one paragraph can cause it to not be concise and clear, in the same way you don't want too little to talk about and end up waffling. Really it depends on the quotes you use as to how much you can get out of them. Short quotes can be good however to back up points.

Also Yk how it’s 4 paragraphs in total, is doing 2 paragraphs from the extract and 2 in the rest of the book good?

i did eduqas for gcse (j&h being worth 40 marks) so i'm unsure if there's a difference in marking but the amount of paragraphs you need will depend on how long and how in depth your paragraphs are. for example, if you followed the common PEEL structure and do one sentence for each letter of the acronym, you will need more paragraphs than if you develop your explanation/analysis or linking more.

i would also say you probably need a few more than four quotes for a 30 mark question. i usually looked to go into the exam with around 10 quotes that could be applicable for several themes and questions but with the intention of not using them all! a realistic answer might've included four or five of my own quotes and one or two from the extract to ensure you're analysing the whole novella AND the given extract (especially if it says in the question something like "referring to this extract and different points of the novella...").

i imagine the main focus should be on your analysis rather than amount of quotes though (but do check what AOs you're assessed for), meaning longer, more developed paragraphs and less quotes!
