A levels for law?

Not sure right now what specific field in law but I do plan on taking something in it, I’m planning on taking english lit and history, but i don’t know whether my third one should be between maths, econ or psychology - or should i replace either history or english? would an epq be worth it or is it too much workload?

Hi juafei!

Thank you for your post! My name is Katy and i'm currently studying Criminal Law as a First Year at Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU).

During A-Levels i did Criminology A-level, Single sport and Psychology A-Level as i wasn't sure what i wanted to do at the time. I would say some universities may be more pickier than others so definitely have a look about but as long as you reach a certain amount of ucas points you can get in (which is what i did)! In terms of picking your 3rd A-Level i would pick whatever you feel you can get the best grade in and whatever your most confident in! I also did an EPQ along my 3 A-Levels and got an A* so i can give you advice or tell you anything you'd like to know about that just reply or pop me a message 😃 I didn't find the EPQ hard but it was a lot of work! My title was "Are Psychopaths more successful in committal or non-committal relationships?" and I done really well. However, everyone is different so I would say definitely go for it and if it becomes too much just drop it and focus on your main 3 A-levels!

If you want to know anything else or would like some more information let me know!

Was the workload for epq too much, especially considering you take essay-based subjects and would be writing heavy, and how much of an impact would you say the epq affected your chances on getting into university?

If I’m completely honesty I was expecting AAB and ended up getting an E in psychology so the EPQ really helped me get into uni as a student whose psychology teacher never came in for the majority of my time in Y12. The workload isn’t heavy if you plan it right and dedicated around 4 hours a week to it! A lot of it you can work with your personal tutor to really help with advice and how you could spin it to make it better! I would definitely try it and give it a couple of weeks really give it a good go and if it’s not working you can always drop it without any repercussions! i really enjoyed it because you can write about anything that interests you!

Hey @juafei,

English Literature and History A-Level both seem like good choices if you want to pursue a Law degree in the future. Although there's not usually any specific A-Levels needed to apply for Law at university, it does help to have some essay-writing experience and both of those subjects will provide lots of that.

In terms of your third choice, I'd choose the one which you enjoy most and believe you can do best in. Maths might be a good break from the more writing-heavy English Lit and History if you genuinely enjoy STEM subjects, but if you prefer essay subjects Economics and Psychology are both strong options. Have a look at the specification of each and see which subject's content interests you the most.

Best of luck,
Eve (Kingston Rep).

For Law there are no specific A level subjects - you just need 3 good grades.
Pick the subject you will enjoy studying the most and dont worry about what might 'look good'.
