Should you take a gap year?

Hi!

This is a hard question to answer, as it's really up to you! A gap year is a great opportunity to travel, gain some work/volunteering experience, and experience life without being in education. If you aren't sure on what to study at University/what to do next, a gap year is a great way to figure that out. However, many people find it difficult to fund a gap year or often decide not to go to University once the year is over. Lots of points to consider, but at the end of the day, it's up to you!

I hope this helps!

Hi there @huhuuhu , just to add on, the experience of a gap year can be different depending on which year of uni/ school you are at. Taking a gap year in uni might look quite different when taking a year out when you are younger. Aside from getting a part-time job or traveling (or both!), you might want to consider getting some work experience or internships in a relevant industry to get a better idea on what you like to do in the future 🙂 What are you looking to get out of a gap year? Is it time to rest or a time to focus on something you have been meaning to do?

Hi there,

With a gap year it really depends on an individuals circumstances and goals

It can be a great idea if you want time to explore your interests, gain work experience, or travel before starting university. It can help you recharge, clarify your goals, and develop skills that will benefit you in the future. If you feel unsure about your course choice or need a break after exams, a gap year can give you the space to make better decisions.

However, a gap year isn’t for everyone. If you’re already motivated and clear about your goals, going straight to university might be better. You’ll stay in the rhythm of studying and avoid losing momentum. Also, planning a productive gap year is important—otherwise, it might feel like wasted time. Think carefully about what you want to achieve and whether a gap year aligns with your plans.

Hi @huhuuhu,

As everyone above has mentioned, taking a gap year really depends on an individuals circumstances and also what stage of education you are at.

My advice is, if you have finished A-levels and are unsure whether university is for you then gap years are very beneficial. I started my first year of university in September but had taken a gap year before coming as I was completely unsure if uni was for me or not. I went travelling to Thailand and Australia and part the way through the trip I decided that when I was back uni was what I was going to do. From having no expectation of going to uni before my gap year and spending hours thinking if it was for me or not, the gap year allowed me time to make sure I made the right decision that was going to benefit me the most!

You do not have to go travelling in a gap year though, you can spend the time working to gain valuable experience for the future or simply just take the time to focus on yourself and make decisions about your plans for the following year. I do strongly believe gap years are an excellent choice for people who are unsure on what to do next. There is definitely not point in rushing to university!

I hope this helps, please feel free to ask any other questions you might have!

Thanks, Matt 🙂
