Newcastle or Leeds for uni?

Hello,

Could anyone tell me which they recommend out of Leeds or Newcastle for uni?

Grades wise, I need ABB for Leeds and Newcastle I need a AAA. I will be studying medicine at either of the unis.

Any advice for what student life is like/if it was enjoyable etc etc would be appreciated!

Hi @anonymous #1 ! ☺️

I graduated from Newcastle University last year, and I studied Psychology.

In terms of Medicine, we are GMC accredited and use an integrated case-led approach. This means you do theory alongside the practical and you will do more placements as you progress. We are a regional med-school so there is a wide variety of placement locations and you get experience working with patients from many different backgrounds. Also, our med-school is attached to the regional hospital (RVI), so you are in a clinical environment from day one. In Year 2, you have the option to study at our sister campus in Malaysia (NUMed), which is unique to Newcastle!

In terms of Newcastle generally, we are a top 5 student city and share the city centre with Northumbria University so there is no shortage of student orientated activities and nightlife! I found that everyone is friendly and I met people from all over the world whilst studying. We are both a campus university and a city university, our central campus is right opposite the main high street and shopping centre (Eldon Square). The medical and business school are just a short walk away and I recommend attending an open day to get a proper feel for the city!

Here are our upcoming open days for 2025:

Friday 27 June 2025

Saturday 28 June 2025

Saturday 4 October 2025

Saturday 22 November 2025

You can book on to these through our website here Undergraduate Open Days | Study With Us | Newcastle University.

Another important factor is student accommodation, our halls of residence are never more than a 20 minute walk away from central campus. The med school is a short 5-10 minute walk from main campus and there are popular halls such as Park View and Marris House nearby. On our open days you can view accommodation and we have more guidance about this on our website! (Accommodation | Accommodation | Newcastle University).

If you haven't already, check on our website to see if you are eligible for PARTNERS! This lowers your grade offer to BBB with successful completion of our free summer school - some of the eligibility may change for 2026 entry but it is good to be aware of the programme. This is actually how I got into Newcastle University! (PARTNERS Supported Entry | PARTNERS Supported Entry | Newcastle University)

Remember that this is a decision that can only be made by you, but I hope this has given you some insight about Newcastle University, if you have any questions please do ask!

Thanks! 💫

Why do Newcastle only ask for ABB, while Leeds ask for AAA? If Newcastle gave you a contextual offer, why didn't Leeds?

I applied for contextual admissions at Leeds. I am unable to attend the partners summer school. I applied for their partners programme, however, I am unable to attend the summer school due to personal reasons so it will revert back into an AAA offer

Can anyone currently studying at Leeds tell me the pros and cons of studying medicine there? Anything they particularly enjoy and what they don't really like about the uni too. Anything will be helpful : )

Fairs fairs, sorry to bug you but I'm really finding it difficult picking between neecastle and leeds. Are you happy with the decision you made to study at leeds? Is there anything you are particularly enjoying? How easy is it to make mates in the med school? What are the demographics of the med students?
