Am I done for?

Hello! I am a first year student and let's just say I've had a tough time during the first semester. I have 4 modules, 2 main ones and 2 optional. I got 90% for one of the main modules, 38.5% for the other one, and I didn't manage to submit anything for the optional modules. How I got into this situation is a very long story. My question is, can I save my first year in my second semester? Do I have to resit all the modules I failed for the first semester in the summer even if I passed them with a very good mark in the second? I just need some advice please :s-smilie:

Talk to your tutor, talk to student wellbeing, talk to the student union.

Hi, thanks for your question, and I am sorry to hear this. The University of Birmingham allows students to recover from first-semester setbacks through reassessment opportunities and strategic focus in subsequent semesters. While you must resit failed modules (e.g., the 38.5% main module and unsubmitted optionals), passing these in summer reassessments will enable progression if you meet the 100-credit threshold for the year. Your strong performance in the 90% module and future second-semester work can contribute to this goal, though failed credits must still be redeemed even if later modules are passed. Reassessment marks are typically capped at the pass mark (40%), but original high grades in other modules remain unaffected. Contact your academic advisor or the Student Services Centre to discuss extenuating circumstances and tailored support for managing workloads or missed submissions.
