Am I done for?

Hello! I am a first year student and let's just say I've had a tough time during the first semester. I have 4 modules, 2 main ones and 2 optional. I got 90% for one of the main modules, 38.5% for the other one, and I didn't manage to submit anything for the optional modules. How I got into this situation is a very long story. My question is, can I save my first year in my second semester? Do I have to resit all the modules I failed for the first semester in the summer even if I passed them with a very good mark in the second? I just need some advice please :s-smilie:

You need to book an appointment to speak to your academic/school/department/faculty office and/or student records/registry - someone who understands the regulations for your degree so they can explain your options to you.

Hey,

It sounds like you’ve had a really tough first semester, but the fact that you’re looking for solutions now is a great step forward. Don’t lose hope, there’s still a chance to turn things around!

Every university has its own policies on resits and progression, so the best thing to do is check your university’s regulations or speak to your academic advisor, personal tutor, or student support team. If your uni has a service like Salford’s AskUs, they can provide guidance on what happens next.

Since you passed one of your main modules with an excellent grade (90%), that should work in your favour. However, failing the other main module and missing the optional ones might mean you’ll need to resit them in the summer or recover the credits another way. Some universities allow you to compensate for failed modules if your overall average meets a certain threshold, while others require you to pass every module individually.

Your second semester performance is crucial, as doing well now could help balance out your first semester struggles. It might also show your lecturers that you’re committed to improving, which could help if you need to request any leniency or support.

I’d definitely recommend reaching out to your lecturers or academic support services to explain your situation. There may be options available that you’re not yet aware of, especially if personal circumstances affected your studies.

You’re not alone in this, lots of students struggle in their first year, and many manage to recover. Keep pushing forward, and make sure you’re using all the resources available to you!

Best of luck!

Hey,

Following on from the great advice offered above, I'd specifically recommend getting in touch with your personal tutor. They'll be able to give you a much better idea of how your course's grading structure works, and will let you know what modules you might need to resit and how that process will work.

It's not uncommon for students to have bad semesters - especially if they're facing personal struggles - but most can bounce back from them with the right help from both their university and their friends and family. Consider getting in touch with your university's counselling/mental health support services to talk through your current situation, and make sure you have the correct support (both academically and emotionally) going forward.

Best of luck,
Eve (Kingston Rep).

Thank you both for the advice! Sorry for not keeping up with the thread, life has been going on for me  I did speak to one of my professors and they did advice me to contact the welfare department of my university. I'm now looking forward to a, hopefully successful, excruciating circumstances form I sent. Once again, thank you for the advice. I know my question might have seen dumb, or I might have left some key information unmentioned, but I really appreciate the time you took to answer me  It really did help my situation.

I hope you got sorted, and I apologise, but I had to laugh at 'excruciating circumstances form'. Unintentionally accurate!
