Writing

Hi I'm in year 11 and was wondering if anyone knew about any magazines/newspapers etc that accept popular science articles (or articles in general) written by people my age? I really enjoy article writing and competitions seem few and far between. I would write for my school newspaper, but churning out editions is ridiculously slow because not many people want to submit things. Thank you!

Hi,

There's the online magazine the Indiependent, which doesn't have a science column but you could write for lifestyle or opinion (and you could bring science into it). The magazine was set up to allow young people the opportunity to build their skills and reputation in writing and journalism, so lots of the contributors are teenagers/young adults.

There's also the Young Science Writer of the Year Award. I think this has now closed for 2025 entries, but if you're still aged 14, 15, or 16 next year I'd definitely apply. You can write an essay about anything in science, and the winning essay gets published by the BBC. I won it last year for my essay on insulin pumps and their use in managing type 1 diabetes, and it's opened up a lot of opportunities for me. Another part of the prize is a one-year membership to the Royal Institution of Science (based in London). They email me about events that I could attend, and if you live nearby this could be useful for you (I live in Scotland so I can't go to them, but if you live closer it would be beneficial for you to attend some of the events).

The Association of British Science Writers (the ABSW), which organises the Young Science Writer of the Year Award, also has summer camps and events for young people who are interested in science and science writing. These may be good for you to attend.

I hope I could be of some help. 😊
